New station, same old story as former Kamusinga Hockey Team coach guides little known Eshitari Secondary to triumph over Butere

A transfer may have moved Mr Sanya from a hockey power house, Friends School Kamusinga, to little known ACK Eshitari Secondary school in Butere Sub- county but, the winning mentality is still rooted in him. Stage set for the 2019 Nyanza Region term one games as county championships come to a close

Preparations for this year’s Nyanza Region term one games are at an advanced stage. The six counties that make up the Nyanza Region have by now completed their championships and hence decided on the teams to represent them. This year’s Regional games are slated for the 16th to 20th March, 2019, at Homa Bay High school.

According to Nyanza Region’s Secondary Schools Sports Secretary, Mr Tom Thomas Odhiambo, the regional games have been rescheduled to start on 16th March, 2019, from the earlier communicated date. The rescheduling has been occasioned by the the clashing of the Regional calendar with that of Athletics Kenya; with Athletics Kenya holding their National Athletics trials between 20th and 23rd March, 2019.

This is the new Regional calendar for Term one games, according to Mr. Tom:

  • Referees’ Clinic: 16th to 17th March, 2019
  • Reporting date for students: 17th March, 2019
  • Action Dates: 18th to 20th March, 2019
  • Athletics: 18th and 19th March, 2019
  • Swimming: 16th March, 2019

Boys’ basketball defending champion, Ambira from Siaya County, booked their regional ticket today after overcoming Maranda at a pulsating final; but both Ambira and Maranda qualified courtesy of Siaya being the defending champ. Also booking the regional ticket is Barchando; the girls’ basketball title holders despite their loss to Ng’iya in today’s final.

Nyanchwa boys, in Yellow tops, during a time out opportunity when they faced bitter rivals Kisii High School at this year’s Kisii county basketball final played at Tenders today. Nyanchwa defeated Kisii by 52 to 47 points to pocket the Regional ticket.

AGORO SARE SCOOPS ‘EVERYTHING’ IN HOMA BAY COUNTY

In Homa Bay County, Agoro Sare Boys were on fire picking 3 titles in Hockey, Basketball and Rugby 7’s. Agoro will be presenting a total of 4 teams at this year’s Regional games. Apart from hockey, basketball and Rugby 7’s Agoro will present another team in handball. The Homa Bay county games came to a close today at Homa Bay School with all finalists picking regional tickets; since Homa Bay will be hosting the Term one Regional games this year.

In the neighbouring Kisii county, defending basketball champs Nyanchwa boys had to keep their cool in order to overcome bitter rivals Kisii High. It is Kisii High who led for the better part of the high octane match played at Tendere; only for Nyanchwa to turn the tables and clinch victory in the last quarter. In Nyamira county, Nyambaria boys (playing at home) reclaimed the basketball title at the games that ended yesterday and will be joined by Sironga girls.

This year’s term one games will see some slight changes after the Education Ministry scrapped Heptathlon and Decathlon from the Secondary schools games. The changes also saw amalgamation of Rugby 7’s and 15’s that will now be played concurrently in term one.

Here is a roundup of all the County winners; across the region:

2019 Secondary Schools National Term One Games- Match Preview

The 2019 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, National Term One games enter decisive stage today as teams fight for places at tomorrow’s semi finals. Below is a preview for today’s final group matches in Basketball.

BASKETBALL- GIRLS

Holders Kaya Tiwi are eyeing to retain their trophy after recording impressive results in their opening two matches. The Girls from the Coast region mercilessly hammered Mua Girls 110 to 29 in their first match on Tuesday. In their second clash, yesterday, Kaya Tiwi laboured to a 53-49 win over Buru Buru. Kaya Tiwi face Loreto Girls this morning, at 9.00am. Having booked a semis slot, the Coastal champs will be striving to finish top of group B.

Focus will, though, be on the Pool A clash pitting Tigoi against St. Brigids. Both teams are equal on points; with St. Brigid’s sitting at the summit courtesy of their Superior Goal Difference. A win for either team will see them finish top of pool A.

In the boys’ category, defending champs Laiser Hill are firmly on course to retaining their trophy. They recorded a 82-33 win in their opening match against Coast Region’s Agha Khan Academy; on Tuesday. A second win yesterday saw them storm the semis and are poised to finish top of group A; as they face North Eastern’s Darul Hikma who are yet to record a win at this year’s championship. A pulsating encounter is expected between Alliance and Agha Khan Academy. The two teams will be jostling for second spot in the group and thus a ticket to tomorrow’s semis. Agha Khan have a slight edge over their opponents going into today’s clash; as they have a marginally stronger goal difference.

The hottest clash of the day is perhaps the Dagoretti versus the Agoro Sare; pool B match. The two teams have already booked semi finals tickets. But, they will be eyeing to finish top of the group to avoid a possible difficult semi final clash against Laiser Hill. The Lake region champions, Agoro Sare, who are making their maiden appearance at the National Stage have, so far, done excellently well. The Agoro Sare Coaching duo of Sir Ben and Anangwe will be hoping to overcome Dagoretti; coached by the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Chairman, Mr. Peter Oreo.

Nyanza Region Basketball boys’ defending champions, Ambira, kicked off their title defence by recording a 100 percent win in their opening two clashes today. Ambira defeated Kisii’s Nyanchwa 65- 59 in a hotly contested group A clash played at Homa Bay High school. It is Nyanchwa who led in the first quarter 19-12 only for them to fall in the second quarter by a 20-11 margin. Nyanchwa picked up from where they had left in the first quarter by recording a 15-14 lead in the third quarter. But, Ambira had other plans as they picked 19 points against Nyanchwa’s 14 in the fourth quarter to walk away with the bragging rights.

In the day’s other basketball boys’ matches show stoppers, hosts Agoro Sare (last year’s finalists) were on fire humbling Nyamira’s Nyambaria 90-22 before seeing off Maranda 72-42.

In the girls’ category, holders Barchando collected maximum points recording back to back wins against newbies Tuk Jowi and regulars Asumbi.

Other title holders who recorded impressive wins in their opening clashes were: Kanyawanga boys (Hand ball), Sega (Girls’ Handball), Sinyolo (Girls’ hockey) and Kisumu Day (Boys’ Hockey).

The games enter day two tomorrow; Tuesday 18th March, 2019, with the remaining preliminary matches and knock outs. Finals will be played on Wednesday with winners booking tickets to the National games to be staged in Mombasa county from 6th April, 2019.
