St Anthony’s, Dagoreti book tickets to East Africa Games, FEASSSA, as National Secondary schools games hit climax; full results

St Anthony’s Boys, Kitale, and Dagoreti booked tickets to this year’s Secondary Schools, KSSSA, Soccer Under 20 national games’ final in style after winning their respective semis matches. This also means that both St Anthony’s and Dagoreti will represent Kenya at this year’s East Africa games. First to qualify was Dagoreti under the auspices of the current Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, chair and principal Dagoreti Mr Peter Orero. dagoreti thumped 2018 finalists Olbolsat 3-1 in an entertaining semi final played at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, on Friday 2nd August, 2019. After playing to a barren draw in regulation and added time, St Anthony’s were lucky to defeat hard battling Ebwali via spot kicks. Newbies Ebwali representing the Western region were unlucky missing the sixth penalty to hand St Anthony’s 6-5 victory at the spot kicks. Dagoreti now will take on St Anthony in a tough final slated for Saturday 3rd August, 2019.

Elsewhere, Nyanza’s Mogonga stormed the boys’ volleyball final after overcoming stiff opposition from Namwela to win the semi by 3-1 sets. Mogonga will now battle it out for the National trophy with Lelmokwo who dumped Lang’ata out of the championship via a 3-0 sets win. Both Mogonga and Lelmokwo will also represent Kenya at the FEASSSA games in Arusha, Tanzania. But it is Nyakach who have reaped big from the term 2 games since they will present two teams in Arusha. Nyakach has both the Soccer under 20 and netball teams at tomorrow’s finals.

KSSSA Rugby 7’s Medalists, Butula Boys, feted

Schools within Butula Constituency have been asked to embrace co-curricular activities to mold all round citizens.

Speaking today at Butula Boys during an end of year tournament that brought together rugby seven teams in the sub county, area Member of Parliament Joseph Maero Oyula congratulated the Butula Boys sevens squad for putting up a tough fight in the tournament, adding that they had not only made Kenya proud, but also Butula constituency.

“Today’s educators and professionals studying school curriculum and child’s development have recognized and acknowledged the importance of sports in education. The idea is to promote more holistic development, and sports play an instrumental role in it,” said Oyula.

The team had to put up with stiff competition to be crowned champion. It is also worth noting that Butula Boys are the county champions and emerging second countrywide.

The boys represented Kenya in the East Africa Schools’ competitions where they finished fourth overall. The emerging champions are focused on becoming a force to reckon with in the near future with majority targeting to join the main Kenya National Rugby Sevens team.

“I am impressed by your excellent performance, and I am willing to sponsor every interested youth within this constituency to ensure that every talent is tapped and harnessed for the betterment of our people,” said the MP.

Oyula encouraged the youngsters to similarly work hard in their studies to ensure they get good grades to advance in their academic journey.

“The dispensation of relying only on talent is gone, you have to exploit it, and also put similar efforts in academics to ensure that you emerge as a balanced and competent individual, ” advised the MP, adding that this is where the Competency Based Curriculum is headed.

Expressing his excitement, team captain Denis Masya attributed his team’s success to hard work, discipline and dedication to training. “We have registered a sterling performance in this tournament, despite the fact that it is our first attempt at the East African Championship,” said Masya.

The captain appealed to the government to diversify funding to rugby and not only football and athletics, due to emerging talent among the youth.

“As opposed to the perception that football and athletics are the most popular sports in Kenya, many youths have gained interest in Rugby, and would want to explore it to professional levels,” added Masya.

The sentiments were mirrored by school Coach Libondo Shimenga who noted that many sports activities are group-based and requiring them to interact with their teammates. This helps in the development of social skills among children.

Individual sports also require some level of coordination with coaches or interaction with competitors. Thus, in general, engagement in sports provides a platform and means for an individual to interact with others and helps one refine their socializing skills.

NAKURU BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

Holders Kanyawanga, Sega, Barchando and Ambira off to a flying start as Nyanza region term one games get underway at Homa Bay.

Nyanza Region Basketball boys’ defending champions, Ambira, kicked off their title defence by recording a 100 percent win in their opening two clashes today. Ambira defeated Kisii’s Nyanchwa 65- 59 in a hotly contested group A clash played at Homa Bay High school. It is Nyanchwa who led in the first quarter 19-12 only for them to fall in the second quarter by a 20-11 margin. Nyanchwa picked up from where they had left in the first quarter by recording a 15-14 lead in the third quarter. But, Ambira had other plans as they picked 19 points against Nyanchwa’s 14 in the fourth quarter to walk away with the bragging rights.

In the day’s other basketball boys’ matches show stoppers, hosts Agoro Sare (last year’s finalists) were on fire humbling Nyamira’s Nyambaria 90-22 before seeing off Maranda 72-42.

In the girls’ category, holders Barchando collected maximum points recording back to back wins against newbies Tuk Jowi and regulars Asumbi.

Other title holders who recorded impressive wins in their opening clashes were: Kanyawanga boys (Hand ball), Sega (Girls’ Handball), Sinyolo (Girls’ hockey) and Kisumu Day (Boys’ Hockey).

The games enter day two tomorrow; Tuesday 18th March, 2019, with the remaining preliminary matches and knock outs. Finals will be played on Wednesday with winners booking tickets to the National games to be staged in Mombasa county from 6th April, 2019.
