History of St. Martin’s Kathonzweni Boys’ High School

The institution was established in 1970 as a Harambee (community) day secondary school. It began on land that had been part of Kathonzweni HGM Primary School. At the time of its founding, the school was a mixed institution admitting both boys and girls, and it started with a small population of only about fifteen students. This humble beginning marked the foundation of what would later become a prominent boys’ school.
In its early years, the school was managed by the local community before the Catholic Diocese of Machakos took over as the sponsor. The involvement of the Catholic Church helped shape the school’s values, discipline, and identity, contributing significantly to its steady growth and development.
Between 1986 and 1989, the school expanded its academic programs to include A-level education, mainly focusing on arts subjects. During this period, many students successfully progressed to universities and middle-level colleges, boosting the school’s academic reputation.
As the school continued to grow, major structural changes took place. In the 1990s, it transitioned from a mixed day school to a boys’ boarding school. This transition was completed between 2008 and 2010, when the girls were fully phased out. This change allowed the school to focus on providing a more structured and disciplined environment for boys.
In 2007, the school was officially re-registered, marking a new phase in its administration. Later, in 2017, it was upgraded to an extra-county school and adopted the name St. Martin’s Kathonzweni Boys’ High School, in line with the Catholic tradition of naming institutions after saints.
Today, the school has grown into a large institution with a population of hundreds of students. It is recognized for its strong academic performance and has also been identified as a STEM-focused school by the Ministry of Education.
