Kenya Secondary Schools Sports (KSSSA) Chair and Dagoreti Principal Peter Orero to vie for Kibra MP seat

Current Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association(KSSSA) Chairman Peter Orero is eyeing the Kibra Constituency Parliamentary seat. Orero who is also the Principal to Dagoreti high school, in Nairobi, will face off with 26 other contestants who are interested in the seat through the Orange Democratic Movement, ODM, ticket.

ODM leader Raila Odinga led a rally at Kibra on Sunday August 26, 2019 where he also paraded the contestants. He announced that the at least 26 aspirants will battle it out for the ODM ticket during primaries slated for Saturday August 31, 2019.

Orero will face off with Imram Okoth (Younger brother to the late Ken Okoth), DJ Kriss Darlin and Benson Musingu (ODM National Youth Coordinator).

The Kibra seat fell vacant following the demise of Ken Okoth who succumbed to colorectal cancer related complications in July this year.

Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission, IEBC, chairman Wafula Chebukati has announced that the by-election for the Kibra Parliamentary seat will be conducted on November 7, 2019.

“The campaign period for the by election shall start on September 9 and cease on November 4, being 48 hours before the by election, and shall run between 7am and 6pm” Mr Chebukati added.

IEBC has given public servants to resign from their posts if they are interested in vying for the Kibra Parliamentary seat.

PETER ORERO; THE SPORTS ENTHUSIAST

Orero has had successful stints in matters sports. In February 2018, the long serving Nairobi region Secondary Schools chairman, Peter Orero was elected the KSSSA chairman to succeed the late Kimtai Ngetich whose life was cut short via a tragic accident in September 2017.

Orero; a celebrated sports enthusiast, joined Dagoretti high as the Principal in 2017 from Upper Hill. He is remembered for guiding Upper Hill to clinching national accolades and making it a sports power house not only in Kenya but also the Was African region. In basketball, Orero guided Upper Hill into dominance in the Nairobi region; winning three national titles and the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) gold medal in 2013 at Lira in Uganda.

In the just concluded East Africa Secondary schools Games, Dagoretti under the auspice of Orero presented three teams; Boys’ Basketball, Soccer and Rugby 15’s. The basketball team won silver after falling to champions Buddo Secondary from Uganda 58-72 in the finals. The Rugby 15’s aside team also clinched silver while the Soccer team finished at fourth position.

Mr Orero spent 12 years at Kamukunji High as a games teacher before Upper Hill. He also served at Lang’ata High as a Principal.

In his games Career, that spans over 2 decades, Orero has helped identify and develop talents not only in basketball but also soccer. Among talents scouted and developed by Orero are: Victor Wanyama (Tottenham Hotspur midfielder), Michael ‘Engineer’ Olunga, Musa Mohammed Macdonald Mariga and former Stars hitman Dennis ‘the Menace’ Oliech; among others.

Apart from being the KSSSA chairman, Orero is also the Kenya Basketball Federation, KBF, treasurer and a FEASSSA committee executive member.
