Insecurity in the North Rift; Govt dispatches High Level Security Team to North Rift to End Escalating Insecurity.

The government has dispatched the Secretary of Internal Security, GSU Commandant, and RDU Commandant to the North Rift to reinforce the ongoing security operation against cattle rustlers responsible for the recent killings, maiming, destruction of property and theft of livestock.

‘The Government is deeply concerned by the continued deterioration of security in the North Rift region, specifically
in Baringo, West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana and Laikipia counties, due to cattle rustling and other criminal acts over the past two months.

Further, the Government strongly condemns the incitement to violence and the illegal possession of firearms, which have seen an escalation of inter-communal attacks leading to loss of lives, maiming, and destruction of property and livelihoods.

The persistent elements of misconduct and inter-communal squabbling have contributed to instability in the region thereby prompting the Government to take urgent action on this matter.

In this regard, a high-level security team comprising the Secretary of Internal Security, GSU Commandant, and the
RDU Commandant has been dispatched to the area as a precursor of stiff measures set to be undertaken to curb further escalation of the sad state of affairs.

The three will join the Rift Valley regional security team to reinforce operational responses and lead firm action against criminal elements in the area with a view to bringing those found culpable to justice.
Kenya continues to be a beacon of peace in the region and the Government is, therefore, committed to doing everything possible to bring lasting peace in the area and promote healing, reconciliation, and coexistence among the communities.’
