The Kenyan government has officially reintroduced the Kazi Mtaani initiative through a new program called Climate Workx, was launched on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. This extensive employment initiative aims to offer temporary job opportunities to over 110,000 young people nationwide, specifically targeting those aged 18 to 35.

10. How to Apply:

The program will be managed by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO). Its goals include addressing youth unemployment while also advancing the government’s climate resilience and infrastructure maintenance efforts. Additionally, it aims to promote national values, civic participation, and personal growth among the youth.

The Kazi Mtaani program has been revamped to emphasize both community service and environmental sustainability, aligning with the government’s long-term vision to create green jobs, enhance tree cover, maintain public infrastructure, and uplift communities.

– Promote national values and patriotism.
– Support climate action initiatives, such as tree planting and seedling production.
– Contribute to local infrastructure development through road maintenance.
– Equip youth with skills and experience in structured work environments.

Latest Job vacancies at the National Police Service Commission, NPSC, Kenya

Job Descriptions:

Successful applicants will be assigned roles within their local communities, categorized into two main groups:

1. General Workers (Youth Participants)

General workers will undertake manual and semi-skilled tasks related to environmental conservation, community infrastructure upkeep, and national awareness.

Key Responsibilities:

– Perform routine road maintenance, including clearing vegetation, unclogging drains, patching potholes, and repairing sidewalks.
– Assist with tree planting activities in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), including digging holes, planting seedlings, watering, and maintaining planted areas.
– Participate in seedling production in nurseries, involving bed preparation, seed sowing, transplanting, watering, and pest management.
– Conduct general cleaning in public spaces such as markets, roadsides, and informal settlements.
– Prepare and maintain tree seedbeds and compost areas for local nurseries.
– Attend civic education sessions during off-work periods, focusing on national values, patriotism, hygiene, and personal development.
– Submit daily attendance and progress reports to supervisors.
– Maintain tools and equipment during the work period.
– Adhere to discipline and safety protocols in the field.

Duration and Work Cycle:

Workers will be divided into two groups, each serving for 10 consecutive weekdays (Monday to Friday), followed by a rest period for structured development sessions.

Remuneration:

Workers will earn KES 500 per day, paid via M-Pesa after each 10-day shift.

Work Location:

All assignments will be in the applicants’ home villages, with tasks managed by Assistant Chiefs, Nyumba Kumi leaders, and technical officers from KeRRA/KURA/KFS.

2. Supervisors

Supervisors will oversee local activities, ensuring coordination, documentation, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

– Coordinate and lead daily field activities in assigned areas.
– Conduct morning roll calls and daily briefings.
– Assign tasks to general workers and ensure fair work distribution.
– Supervise scheduled projects like road maintenance, tree planting, and cleaning.
– Ensure proper use and accountability of tools and protective gear.
– Monitor attendance and submit daily reports to government field officers and engineers.
– Identify challenges and report any incidents or emergencies during work hours.
– Guide and mentor team members on program values, discipline, and safety.
– Collaborate with KeRRA/KURA engineers and NGAO officers to meet daily targets.
– Keep accurate records of wages, attendance, work completed, and materials used.

Eligibility for Supervisors:

– Aged between 18 to 35 years.
– Resident of the local community.
– Preference for former NYS recruits due to their experience in discipline and leadership.
– Basic literacy and reporting skills are advantageous.
– Ability to mobilize and lead a team respectfully and inclusively.

Remuneration:

Supervisors will earn KES 580 per day, paid via M-Pesa after each 10-day work cycle.

Program Features and Special Guidelines:

1. Gender Parity (50:50 Rule)

Recruitment will adhere to a strict 50:50 gender balance, ensuring equal opportunities for male and female applicants.

2. Disability Inclusion (30%)

30% of available slots will be reserved for individuals with disabilities, who are encouraged to apply and will be prioritized.

3. Household Quota

Only one person per household will be eligible for recruitment to ensure fair opportunity distribution.

4. Village-Based Recruitment

Recruitment will occur at the village level, with youth deployed locally for easier supervision and reduced transportation costs.

5. Civic Education and Personal Growth

During off-work days, youth will engage in interactive sessions covering topics such as national unity, patriotism, hygiene, financial literacy, climate change, and leadership.

6. Payment and Financial Guidelines

Wages will be paid via M-Pesa after each 10-day work period. Youth are advised against using overdraft services to avoid payment issues.

7. Safety and Conduct

All participants must maintain high standards of discipline and safety. Misconduct will result in immediate disqualification.

Who Should Apply:

The program is open to:

– Kenyan youth aged 18 to 35.
– Residents of the respective villages.
– Persons with disabilities.
– Both male and female youth.
– Ex-NYS and experienced public service youth for supervisory roles.

How to Apply:

Interested youth can apply online starting June 3, 2025, through a government-provided digital application portal. Applicants must provide personal details such as name, ID number, age, gender, ward, mobile number, disability status (if applicable), NYS status, and education level.
