LWANYA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

St. Stephens Lwanya Girls Secondary School was registered in 1976, and operated as a Day Mixed school up to 1992. In 1993, the school became a Purely Girls school, a decision which was supported by the Sponsor, the Parents, the Board of Governors and the Education Office after the St. Kizito incident.

The former Head teacher (Mrs. Oyatsi Phanice) moved in with a number of girls from Mundika Secondary School, and the boys who were then in this school moved to Mundika Secondary School. The situation then was difficult since boarding facilities were very minimal.

Bleak future for BOM, private schools’ teachers

The future is gloom for thousands of teachers working in private schools. This is after most of the private schools moved to terminate payments to these tutors siting challenges caused by the current Corona virus pandemic. With all learning institutions closed, owners of private schools say it has become impossible for them to continue paying the teachers.

Private schools depend on fees paid by parents to run. And since fees can not be collected during the current closure period, most of these schools have opted to send their teachers on unpaid leaves until the current turbulent times are over.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances caused by Covid-19 worldwide, the board of management of Carol Academy has decided to allow you to proceed on unpaid leave effective April 1, 2020 until further notice as directed by the national government,” reads a letter by Carol Academy dated March 31, 2020.

“We regret this action but have no alternative as the school is no longer operational. We pray and hope that the situation will improve in the coming days when we shall inform you to resume work,” the school’s board adds.

Uncertainty for teachers on BOM terms

This group of teachers will find it rough in coming days as family needs stare at them. And with most home owners refusing to offer rent free houses, for the time being, it is going to be very difficult for these crop of teachers.

Elsewhere, teachers employed by Boards of Management (BOMs) will be hoping that the school heads continue releasing their pay. Some school heads have started sending signs of hard times ahead with others advising the BOM teachers to spend whatever little they may be having cautiously. “The future is uncertain. Please spend your March pay prudently as we may face difficulties in months to come if the government does not release more fund,” advised one Principal.

BOM teachers receive their pay from monies sent to schools by the Government through the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) programme.

The first Covid19 case was reported in Kenya on March 13. This forced the President to order for closure of all learning institutions to curb further spread of the deadly virus.

The Ministry of Education has indicated that this year’s national examinations (KCSE and KCPE) will no be postponed saying they have back up options. Schools are currently on official holiday.

13 pupils confirmed dead at Kakamega Primary Primary, Scores injured

Thirteen, 13, pupils of Kakamega Primary School have been confirmed dead following a stampede as the kids were leaving for home after classes. The stampede broke out after the bell rang to signify the end of classes. Education CS George Magoha has sent a message of condolences to families, relatives and friends of the 13 pupils of Kakamega primary who died in a school tragedy today. 40 others were injured in the incident.

Kakamega Central OCPD David Kabena said 39 were injured and 20 treated and discharged.

Mount Kenya University, MKU, students continue with studies via online platforms: CoronaVirus Pandemic

Mount Kenya University, MKU, students have continued to learn amid the CoronaVirus shutdown. The university is providing Electronic learning to thousands of students via various digital platforms.

According to resolutions that were passed by University’s Senate in a special meeting held on 16th March, 2020, the University extended the online learning platform to the regular students (day, evening and weekend) to facilitate the learning process to complete the remaining part of the Semester / Trimester. Open, Distance and Electronic Learning (ODEL) and Distance, Institution-Based and Electronic Learning (DIBEL) students on the other hand would continue with their learning uninterrupted.

The University suspended the face-to-face learning with effect from Monday 16th March, 2020 and Students were requested to clear from the University premises by close of business on Tuesday 17th March, 2020 until further notice.

TELEVISED LECTURES.

“Students who are writing their theses and research projects will continue uninterrupted with the support of their supervisors,” assures the University.

Online learning is now fully supplemented through televised lectures in collaboration with TV 47.

The lectures run from Monday to Friday at 10.00a.m-10.30a.m and 3.00p.m-3.30p.m.

MKU Televised Lectures’ airing schedule/timetable.

The address to the elearning platform for regular students is; elearning.mku.ac.ke. Student who may  not able to log in are advised to send their official details (name and registration number) to info@mku.ac.ke indicating that they are not able to access the e-learning.

TENWEK HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Tenwek Boys High school was started in 1945 by the World Gospel missionaries as an intermediate school and is currently under the sponsorship of the African Gospel Church (AGC). Among those who went through the school when it was intermediate include the late Mr. Samwel Cheruiyot Langat (Former director of KLB). The school was converted to a secondary school and admitted the first boys in 1961.

The first principal was E. Gilger from 1961 – 1968. The current principal is the 9th since 1961. The school mission is “to provide excellent teaching that equips learners with the necessary skills and abilities which will enable them to perform exemplary well in the National examinations as well as exploring new ways of handling emerging issues in the society and their potentials to the fullest.”

Among the old boys include Mr. Mark Bor,the late Dr.Bishop ROno (Bishop AGC Kenya),late Hon. Kipkalya Kones,Ambassader Hon.John Koech Hon.Frankline Bett ,Hon.Joseph Nanok.

Schools told to reduce costs of uniforms for students

The Ministry of Education has instructed schools to cut down on costs of uniforms for students. Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang has asked the school heads to find ways of reducing the costs of uniforms that have caused agony for most parents.

The PS said some learners who sat for the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCPE) examination were unable to report to form one due to the high uniform costs. He said a total of 1,061,000 pupils out of the 1,088,986 have so far reported to secondary schools countrywide. The remaining learners had either repeated in class eight or proceeded to Technical and Vocational Training Centres without being coerced.

EXTRA LEVIES

Apart from high costs of uniforms, some schools are still charging extra levies. In one school for instance, parents are asked to pay for Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), remedial studies and motivation.

Other charges imposed on parents include: Examination registration processing fees and money for stationery.

The Government offers a fee subsidy of Sh22,244 per year for all students in Puplic schools under the Free Day Secondary Education Programme.

MAXIMUM FEES PAYABLE

Disbursement of capitation to schools is done in the ratio 50:30:20 thus;

  • Term one 2020: by 30th November 2019.
  • Term two 2020: by 30th March 2020.
  • Term three 2020: by 30th July 2020.

The maximum school fees to be charged by all National schools and Extra county schools that are located in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret  should not exceed Sh53,554 per year.

On the other hand, boarding schools including extra county schools that are located in other areas other than the town of Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret should charge a maximum of Sh40,535 from parents as the yearly fees.

Principals have been urging the Government to allow them charge extra fees to cater for the large influx of learners to Secondary schools from the one hundred Percent transition drive.

KCSE 2019 Central Region Secondary Schools’ ranking; Full results for all schools in Kiambu County

Alliance Boys High school topped in the 2019 KCSE ranking of schools in Kiambu County; in the Central region of Kenya. Alliance Boys with a total of 422 candidates had 48 A’s, 160 A-, 95 B+, 55 B, 26 B-, 21 C+, 8 C, 8 C- and 1 D+.

The school had a mean score of 10.019 (B+ plus). This was an improvement of 0.412 from the 2018 mean score of 9.607.

Alliance Girls and MaryHill Girls High school scooped positions 2 and 3; respectively.

KAPKOLEI GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S KCSE RESULTS

Individual candidates can check their KCSE results by sending an SMS with their full index number (11digits) followed by the word KCSE. The SMS can be sent from any subscriber’s line (Safaricom, Airtel or any other) to 20076. For example, send the SMS in the format 23467847002KCSE to 20076. There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. It is important that you check your result slip to ensure there are no errors on it. Be keen to see that details such as your name, index number and sex are accurate. In case of any discrepancy, please notify your principal or KNEC immediately for correction.
