KMTC Students,

Students reject 21 university courses in the 2020/2021 KUCCPS admission

It has emerged that the 2019 KCSE candidates gave close to 20 university courses a wide berth during the just concluded 2020/2021 students’ selection process by the Kenya universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS. No single student selected these courses that have a total declared capacity of 940. The courses may have been distasteful to the prospective freshers as they are possibly unmarketable and with very low absorption rates in the job market.

Egerton university is the most hit after eight courses offered at the institution were rejected by the students. The 8 courses have a total declared capacity of 280. A total of 10 universities were affected (see table below).

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has since directed the Universities offering the rejected programmes to establish why they are not attractive and implement corrective measures.

In the 2019 KCSE examination, 689,007 Kenyan citizen candidates were successfully
examined. Of these, 125,463 attained mean grades of C+ and above, hence were eligible
for placement to university as Government-sponsored students. The remaining 563,544
were eligible for placement to TVET programmes at Diploma, Craft Certificate and Artisan
Certificate levels.

SEE ALSO;

With regard to available capacities, universities declared 145,129 vacancies for Government sponsored students, while TVET Institutions declared 276,163.
Following the successful completion of the placement process, 122,831 candidates have
secured placement to degree courses in universities while 88,724 got placed in TVET
institutions. Of those placed in TVET, 53,726 will be admitted to Diploma; 29,112 to Craft
Certificate and 5,886 to Artisan Certificate courses.

SOME STUDENTS OPT TO JOIN TVETs INSTEAD OF UNIVERSITIES

Data from the placement agency shows that 2,632 candidates who scored C+ and above in the 2019 KCSE examination and qualified for placement to Degree programmes opted for
Diploma courses in TVET institutions, and were placed appropriately. This number has been
growing over time. In 2019, the number was 1,269.

This year’s placement data indicates that of the 122,831 applicants placed to Degree
courses, 66,661 (54.27%) will join Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) programmes, which are critical for producing skilled workforce required for the
attainment of the “Big Four” Agenda. The remaining 56,170 (45.73%) have been placed to
Arts and Humanities.
Of the applicants placed to STEM, 42,267 (63.41%) are male while 24,394 (36.59%) are
female.

Lugari Diploma Teachers’ Training College Details

Lugari Diploma Teachers Training College, registered by the Ministry of Education is currently the second highest Public Government Training Institution based in Western Kenya. The Institution is located in Kakamega County, Lugari Sub County, in Munyuki Sub-Location, approximately 35kilometres from Eldoret on Uganda – Webuye Road, between Turbo Township and Kipkarren River Township, 4 km from the main Eldoret-Malaba road, in a serene and cool environment away from industrial and traffic pollution.

The concept of starting a Public Teacher Training College was first mooted in 2013. Lugari community was keen on having a Teacher Training College started in the sub county. It was largely felt that the establishment of the College other than assisting students from all over Kenya would encourage students from the Secondary and Primary schools within the Constituency/County to uplift their performance, and also stir economic growth in the region.

It was an initiative of the Community through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and Ministry of Education. It is managed by a Substantive Board of Management appointed by the Cabinet Secretary – Ministry of Education. The College was cleared by The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) and received its first batch of students in September 2015/2016 Academic Year.

KUCCPS- We haven’t advertised for application/ revision of degrees, diplomas and Certificate courses.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, has warned the public against fraudulent messages circulating in Social media; purporting to be originating from them. The misleading message , being circulated on various media platforms, indicates that the KUCCPS will open its portal on Thursday next week (24th January 2019) for revisions and first time applications.

“The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) hereby brings to the attention of the public that the message circulating in social media platforms is fake and does not originate from us,” reads, in part, a media presser from KUCCPS

The placement service closed the portal on 5th January, 2019 for schools; which were supposed to assist the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, candidates to apply for various courses. Candidates who did not manage to apply for their courses of choice will now have to wait for KUCCPS to re-open the portal before they can do so.

The placement service, that places learners to tertiary institutions for Degrees, Diploma and Certificate courses, now says it will officially communicate on when they will re-open the portal. “We shall issue our official communication on placement through the mainstream print and broadcast media, website and our official social media handles once all the necessary arrangements have been put in place,” KUCCPS advises.

To check updates from KUCCPS, visit their official website at https://kuccps.net

Below is the fraudulent message that KUCCPS warns the general public to be wary of:

BY CEO KUCCPS

Please take note of dates : Midnight 24 January to 14 February 2019 for application/ revision of applications to join university.

“70,073 KCSE students who got a C plus of 46 points and above will join public and private universities. This is according to Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO, John Muraguri.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Mr. Muraguri further said that KCSE candidates who scored grade C minus of 32 points will be eligible to join tertiary institutions to pursue diploma courses.

According to the statement, all candidates who scored a mean grade of D of 18 points and above will now be able to enroll for craft certificate courses offered in tertiary institutions. Mr. Muraguri added that KUCCPS will open its online application system on Wednesday, January 24 at midnight (wrong date as 24th shall be on Thursday) which shall close on February 14 for candidates to allow students revise their placement choices.

He advised students who are yet to submit their applications through their schools to apply for degree, diploma or certificate courses as government sponsored students

Ends.
