Maseno takes on Agoro Sare in the boys’ basketball final, Sinyolo girls disqualified in hockey as Nyanza region term 1 games reach climax

Above, Athletes in Boys’ Cross Country championship dash for gold at this year’s Nyanza Region Term One games at Homa Bay High School. The games come to a close today, Wednesday 20th March, 2019.

The three day Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association, NRSSSA, term one games come to close today with pulsating clashes on the offing. Tampers are expected to rise as teams eye to clinch tickets to this year’s Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, national games in April at Shimo La Tewa High School, Mombasa. The games that have been going down AF Homa Bay School, in Homa Bay County, have had their share of drama as defending girls’ hockey champions, Sinyolo, were shown the door yesterday for fielding an ineligible player.

This is the second time the former national champions are going to miss the national show piece; as they could not grace last year’s edition due to international assignments. Sinyolo were bundled out after officials manning the games realized that one of their key players had not finished 90 days at the institution; per the KSSSA rules. According to the 90 day rule, a transferring student must have completed 90 day days before the championships kick off; in February of the participating year. This rule does not, though, affect form ones.

With Sinyolo out Nyamira girls have a chance of qualifying to the national stage again after taking up Sinyolo’s ticket last year. But, the girls from Siaya County will face an acid taste from Ambassador Pamela Mboya at today’s final.

In the boys category, defending boys’ hockey champions Kisumu day will face off with hosts Homa Bay school at the final for a ticket to Mombasa. At the Semis played yesterday Kisumu day overcame compatriots Maseno 1-0 to storm the finals. Maseno had defeated Kisumu Day by a similar score line at the Kisumu County finals two weeks ago.

In handball, defending champions Sega overcame Rachar 38-12 in the semi finals to set up a final contest with Msare who defeated Miranga by a 30-15 score line. In boys, title holders Kanyawanga will be seeking to retain their trophy as they face Mbita today.

NEW CHAMPS TO BE CROWNED IN BOYS BASKETBALL.

Boys’ basketball will see a new champion being crowned as holders Ambira were downed by Agoro Sare in last evening’s semi final. Agoro Sare made their intent of winning the clash clear from the opening whistle as they lead 17-07 in the first period. They widened the gap in the second period where they garnered 19 points against Ambira’s 15. But, Ambira lead in the third period 16-12 only for Agoro Sare to finish off the game in style by scoring 17 points to Ambira’s 15. This was a sweet revenge for Agoro Sare who were defeated by Ambira in last year’s finals played at St. Mary’s Yala.

Agoro Sare who have been unlucky, playing and losing at consecutive finals, will face off with Maseno whom they defeated at last year’s Semi final that was bitterly contested by the losing side. The two sides are yet to meet at this year’s championship and the match is expected to be explosive; considering that Agoro Sare is playing at home.

In Rugby 7’s, Agoro and Chianda have already booked tickets to the National games after winning the Semi finals matches yesterday. In the first semi Agoro defeated Nduru 17-12 while Chianda defeated Maseno 21-14. The two finalists will be playing for regional glory today having booked their national championship tickets, already.

Here are the Nyanza region term one games’ finals coming up today at Homa Bay School.

Holders Kanyawanga, Sega, Barchando and Ambira off to a flying start as Nyanza region term one games get underway at Homa Bay.

Nyanza Region Basketball boys’ defending champions, Ambira, kicked off their title defence by recording a 100 percent win in their opening two clashes today. Ambira defeated Kisii’s Nyanchwa 65- 59 in a hotly contested group A clash played at Homa Bay High school. It is Nyanchwa who led in the first quarter 19-12 only for them to fall in the second quarter by a 20-11 margin. Nyanchwa picked up from where they had left in the first quarter by recording a 15-14 lead in the third quarter. But, Ambira had other plans as they picked 19 points against Nyanchwa’s 14 in the fourth quarter to walk away with the bragging rights.

In the day’s other basketball boys’ matches show stoppers, hosts Agoro Sare (last year’s finalists) were on fire humbling Nyamira’s Nyambaria 90-22 before seeing off Maranda 72-42.

In the girls’ category, holders Barchando collected maximum points recording back to back wins against newbies Tuk Jowi and regulars Asumbi.

Other title holders who recorded impressive wins in their opening clashes were: Kanyawanga boys (Hand ball), Sega (Girls’ Handball), Sinyolo (Girls’ hockey) and Kisumu Day (Boys’ Hockey).

The games enter day two tomorrow; Tuesday 18th March, 2019, with the remaining preliminary matches and knock outs. Finals will be played on Wednesday with winners booking tickets to the National games to be staged in Mombasa county from 6th April, 2019.

Maseno down Ambira to lift the Maseno Open Basketball title

Maseno Boys lifted the 2019 Maseno Open Boys’ basketball trophy after overcoming fierce opposition from Siaya’s Ambira boys. Playing at their own backyard and buoyed by a large fan base, the home side ( Maseno Boys) lived up to expectations; thumping Ambira 36 points to 25, in a pulsating final played on Sunday evening.

Maseno’s Joseph Murage was the star of the match after scoring 20 points for the home side. The 2018 Nyanza Region Secondary Schools’ basketball boys’ winners, Ambira, led in the first quarter but got the going tough in the second, third and fourth quarters; as Maseno recovered to clinch victory.

The two day event that was staged at Maseno Boys saw various teams compete in such disciplines as: Basketball, Soccer, Rugby, Volleyball and Racquet games.

Teams will now focus on the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, games with grassroots slated for this coming week. The Nyanza Regional championship in basketball is expected to be explosive with holders, Ambira, Maseno school, Agoro Sare, Kisii School and Cardinal on most fans’ lips as being the top contenders. But, these teams have to win their respective Counties’ championships first before competing at the Regionals. Nyanza shall have its regional term one games at Homa Bay School, in Homa Bay County, with winners booking tickets to the National games; at Shimo La Tewa High school in Mombasa.

Apart from basketball, term one games shall also feature: Hockey, Rugby 7’s & 15’s, Handball, Athletics and Cross Country.

It has been an action packed weekend; in matters sports, as teams took to the fields to compete at various tournaments across the country.

School Games: Kisii risks losing hosting rights for the KSSSA National Term 2 Games

School Games: Kisii risks losing hosting rights for the KSSSA National Term 2 Games

In summary:
  • Kisii County Lacks a standard stadium.

  • Secondary Schools’ Term two games to be held on 29th July to 7th August, 2024.

  • Term two games Feature: Soccer, Volleyball, Netball, Rugby7’s (Boys and Girls), Basketball 3 on 3 and Racquet Games

  • Junior School Games to held at same venue and time

Kisii County may be stripped of rights to host the second term National School Games according to latest reports. The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, national executive council is considering moving the games away; citing lack of adequate facilities.

Top on the list is the unavailability of a standard stadium to host Soccer matches as Gusii stadium is currently under renovation. The school games that attract mammoth crowds, more especially soccer, must be played in a standard stadium. Last year, soccer matches were played at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

Kisii County Sports Committee had fronted Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho and Kisii University grounds; but which seemed unsatisfactory. Consequently, the local organizing committee has been given one month to give the final status on preparations.

According to the Ministry of Education Co-Curricular activities’ calendar, Secondary Schools’ Term two games to be held on 29th July to 7th August, 2024. This will involve: Soccer, Volleyball, Netball, Rugby 7’s (Boys and Girls), Basketball 3 on 3 and Racquet Games. Junior School games are also to be staged at the same venue and dates.

KSSSA is mulling taking the games elsewhere with Kisii and Homa Bay being the preferred destinations.

Meanwhile, the pooling for the term 2 games has been released as shown here;

School Games: End of age cheating and impersonation in schools’ games in sight as KSSSA, Education Ministry digs in

The Ministry of Education and the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, have moved in to stem cases of age cheating and impersonation in school games. The Ministry has now made it a requirement that all students participating in school games’ championships must be first captured in the National Education Management Information System, NEMIS, before they can be allowed to compete. Schools will now be required to enter the student’s Unique Personal Identifier, UPI, onto a special team list/ declaration form alongside other details. The UPI to be entered must be that assigned to each student on the NEMIS portal. Other details to be provided on the declaration form are: the student’s full name, Form/ Class, admission number, Date of Admission, Date of Birth, KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) index number and the KCPE year. This way, it will now be easier to eliminate cases of age cheating and impersonation as details of the presented players can be easily retrieved from NEMIS including the learner’s photograph.

The coach or games teacher and the Principal must sign the declaration form indicating that the presented players/ participants are bonafide students.

LIMITATION IN NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

KSSSA, the body that runs secondary schools’ games, has limited the number of foreign players to be included in a school’s team. Going forward, KSSSA has allowed schools to add a maximum of 4 foreign players to their teams and all these players can be fielded at the same time. But, for other team games (basketball, hockey, Rugby, volleyball, netball, and handball) schools will be allowed to include a maximum of three foreign players; with only two featuring for the team during a match at a time. KSSSA has also limited the number of players that a school can transfer from another school. Consequently, no school will be allowed to transfer more than 2 players from another (same) school.

The Ministry has also put a ceiling on the number of participants per team as shown below:

  1. Swimming- 15 participants
  2. Badminton- 6
  3. Hockey- 20
  4. Basketball- 12
  5. Cross Country- 6
  6. Volleyball- 12
  7. Netball- 14
  8. Handball- 14
  9. Rugby 7’s- 11
  10. Rugby 15’s- 20
  11. Athletics- 2 per event
  12. Soccer- 20
  13. Table Tennis- 6
  14. Lawn Tennis- 4

OTHER RULES

1. Under 19 rule: Schools will also be expected to field participants who are under 19 years old in all other disciplines apart from soccer under 16.

2. 90 day rule: As has been the norm, only students who have stayed in their respective schools for at least 90 days prior to the official commencement of the term one games (at Zonal level) will be eligible for participation. This rule does not, though, affect form ones, but new students in other forms must have reported to school by 15th November of the preceding year for them to be eligible.

3. Repeaters: Students repeating will not be allowed to participate during the repeating year. Such students can nevertheless be allowed to participate in the following year. This rule bars all form four repeaters from taking on to the fields of play; during the repeating year.

4. The six year rule: According to KSSSA, a student may participate at the secondary schools’ championships for a maximum period of six continuous years.

5. Documentation: For schools presenting teams, the players/ competitors must have:

  • A copy of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, certificate; forwarded by the Principal. (For form ones, they will be required to have a copy of their result slip).
  • A group photo with the specified number of players for that event with only the Principal and coach posing with the players in the photo.
  • A copy of the birth certificate also forwarded by the principal.
  • A photo Album (Spreadsheet) certified by the Principal.
  • The school Identity Card bearing the student’s details as indicated on the team list.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, also released guidelines on protection of learners while on Co- Curricular activities. Via a circular released last year and which is still in force, TSC holds that:

  1. ALL Principals/Headteachers SHALL ensure that for any co-curricular activity (games and sports, music, drama, scouts, girl guides, educational tours, congresses, exchange programmes, debates, symposia, contests etc) within and/or outside the school, pupils/students are accompanied by at least one registered teacher of the same sex depending on the number of students/pupils involved in the activities.
  2. Persons NOT registered as teachers (including teachers whose names have been removed from the register of teachers) should not be incorporated in the school programmes (including co-curricular activities) to teach, handle, manage, coach, supervise and/or assist in the teaching, handling, managing, coaching, supervision of pupils/learners

Nyanza region sports clinic for teachers comes to an end, a total of over 1,000 teachers trained

The three day Nyanza Region training for referees and coaches came to a close today at Kisumu Day Secondary School, in Kisumu. The training that targeted high school teachers, from the region, saw over 1,000 participants receive coaching and refereeing tips. Interpretation of the rules of the game, officiating and match management tips were also given.

The Kisumu Day clinic saw attendance by teachers from the six counties that make up the region; Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

Teachers trained in: Hockey, Basketball, Handball, Athletics, Rugby, Volleyball, Netball, Soccer, Swimming and Racquet Games. Disciplines like handball attracted many participants, over 150, causing unprecedented strain on available resources.

The clinic comes ahead of kick-off to this year’s term one games; with grass root championships slated for this coming week. 2020 Nyanza Region Secondary Schools term one games: Pools, Draws and Fixtures

Nyanza Region Secondary schools’ 2020 term one games pools, draws and fixtures have been released. The games slated for the 17th to 21st of March at Rapogi High School will feature Basketball, Handball, Athletics, Swimming and Rugby 7’s and 15’s. Swimming will though take place at Agakhan Primary school in Kisumu on 14th March, 2020.

These dates were revised by the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association (NRSSSA), the body running secondary schools’ games in Nyanza. “Due to the National Secretaries meeting and presentation of documents at Nationals, the term one Regional Championship has been rescheduled,” said Mr. Nyantika Geoffrey who is the acting Regional Secretary and Secretary Kisii County Sports Committee.

In the just released pools, the hosting County (Migori) will field two teams in each discipline, while defending counties have also been accorded two slots in respective disciplines. There are lesser teams in hockey because Nyamira County does not present teams in the discipline. Pooling for Rugby 7’s is done during the championship.
