102,619 Teachers receive lesser annual allowance; TSC promises to act

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has clarified that indeed some teachers did not get their annual leave allowance in full. This comes after an outburst from a section of teachers who raised concern that they had received lesser annual allowance that was paid together with the January ,2019 salaries. Today, the Commission has clarified that the under payment is due to the confusion caused by the recently created grades for teachers.

“The leave allowance for teachers and other civil servants is paid as a one off allowance every January. However, the recently created teachers’ CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) pay grades conflicted with the previous job groups,” says MRS J. M. Maundu via a memo dated 25th January, 2019. In the CBA, the teachers’ job groups were changed from the normal J,K,L,M… to B,C,D…

The Commission has now promised to pay the balances in annual allowances together with the February, 2019 salaries. “Subsequently, 102,619 teachers have been underpaid Leave Allowance. The anomaly will be rectified in February 201
