  1. (a) Define the term mining?                                                                                                            (2 marks)

Mining refers to the process of extracting valuable minerals and fossils fuels on or                                     from the earth’s crust.

(b)         Give four ways in which minerals occur.                                                                         (4 marks)

  • Trona mining has created employment opportunities to many Kenyans who earn income thus improving their standards of living.
  • Development of glass and bottle industry as soda ash from trona provides the main raw material.
  • Trona mining has led to development of a tarmac road and railway branch from Konza to Magadi.
  • Provision of social amenities such as schools and a hospital thus improving living standards of the local people.
  • The Kenyan government (national and county) earns revenue through taxation on the profit of the company.
  • The company provides free water to the local people for both domestic and livestock use.

Trona mining has led emergence and growth of Magadi town thus urbanization in the former remote area.

Children Benefiting From Sh80million Cash Transfer Programme

More than 8,000 children under three years of age are benefiting from a Sh80 million cash transfer programme being piloted in three counties.

The one year programme, dubbed Universal Child Benefit (UCB) is being piloted in the most populous sub-counties of Kisumu, Embu and Kajiado counties.

An assistant Director for Children Services in the state department of Social protection, senior citizens affairs and special programmes Peter Ombasa said the 8,265 children drawn from all households in the three counties have been receiving Sh800 per child per month, since the inception of the programme in December 2021.

Ombasa further said the programme which was being piloted by United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with Save the Children organization, World Food Programme and the Kenyan government is set to expire in December 2022.

While noting that every child had a constitutional right to social protection, the Director emphasized the need for improving children outcomes such as good nutrition, health and education which he said the UCB programme was guaranteeing.

He argued that children as future generation was any nation’s investment which if well taken care of, gives high returns and boosts the country’s human capital development.

While speaking during a media engagement workshop, Ombasa said the programme was designed to be shock responsive to children in vulnerable households to help increase their resilience and also offer a platform for delivery of emergency cash when needed.

The programme if well implemented across the country, he said would contribute to an inclusive economic growth by reducing the existing social inequalities and strengthening social cohesion among communities.

The pilot programme which is funded by UNICEF is expected to be handed over to the government for continuity and up scaling after its expiry this December.

(C)Rat  eat more food per  unit body  weight  than  elephant; Rat has  larger  surface  area to volume ratio; therefore tend t0 lose more heat per unit body weight; oxidize more food/faster to maintain body temperature(4mks)

(d) Elephant: least  surface  area to  volume  ratio; lose  water very  slowly  since  some  tissues  are  far  from  body  surface; metabolic  rate  very  slow; hence little water lost through sweating per unit body weight(2mks)

(e)Reptile poikilothermic/depend on environmental temperature; mammal homiothermic/oxidize food to maintain body temperature (2mks)

8(a) (i)   Transpiration is the process by which plants lose water to the atmosphere in form of water vapour

(ii)Translocation is the process by which soluble products of photosynthesis/simple sugars are transported from leaves ;to other parts of the plants through phloem

(b)Temperature: high temperature increases water evaporation from mesophyll cell; increase capacity of atmosphere to hold more water due to faster movement of molecules/ low temperatures reduces the rate of water evaporation; air capacity to hold more water hence low transpiration rate

Humidity:high humidity lower the saturation deficit /reduce ability of atmosphere to hold more water;hence low transpiration rate/low humidity offering great saturat

ion deficit;hence high rate of transpiration

Light intensity:at low light intensity stomata close; reduce surface area over which water is lost/low transpiration rate/stomata open at high light intensity;surface area hence increases transpiration rate

Wind/air current:fast air movement /strong air current  sweep away saturated air around plant;increasing transpiration rate ;still air/weak  air currents make water accumulate around the plant lowering transpiration rate

Size of  stomata/number of  stomata/leaf  area:large/many  stomata/leaves/large area; increase  transpiration  rate/few  leaves/small/few  stomata  reduce  surface  area; hence  low  transpiration  rate

Atmospheric  pressure: low  atmospheric pressure  increase  water evaporation; hence  high  rate  of  transpiration/high  atmospheric pressure  reduce  water  evaporation; hence  low  rate  of  transpiration [3marks] award only  once in each condition/low or high. {max 16marks}
