KUCCPS- We haven’t advertised for application/ revision of degrees, diplomas and Certificate courses.

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, has warned the public against fraudulent messages circulating in Social media; purporting to be originating from them. The misleading message , being circulated on various media platforms, indicates that the KUCCPS will open its portal on Thursday next week (24th January 2019) for revisions and first time applications.

“The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) hereby brings to the attention of the public that the message circulating in social media platforms is fake and does not originate from us,” reads, in part, a media presser from KUCCPS

The placement service closed the portal on 5th January, 2019 for schools; which were supposed to assist the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, candidates to apply for various courses. Candidates who did not manage to apply for their courses of choice will now have to wait for KUCCPS to re-open the portal before they can do so.

The placement service, that places learners to tertiary institutions for Degrees, Diploma and Certificate courses, now says it will officially communicate on when they will re-open the portal. “We shall issue our official communication on placement through the mainstream print and broadcast media, website and our official social media handles once all the necessary arrangements have been put in place,” KUCCPS advises.

KUCCPS online portals down due to maintenance ahead of the 2018 KCSE candidates’ degree, diploma and certificate courses selection/ revision exercise

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, portals have been unavailable for the last two days. According to the KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer, Dr John Muraguri, the online portals have been unavailable since they have been undergoing maintenance.

“The Placement Service is preparing to start the 2019/2020 Application/Revision Exercise. To this effect, the online portals including Students, Principals and Institutions Portals will be undergoing maintenance between Monday February 4th and Tuesday February 5th 2019,” says Dr Muraguri.

Most services have been disrupted as a result of the portals outage; causing anxiety among the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, candidates. Dr Muraguri says normal services will be available from 6th February, 2019 adding that the Placement Service regrets any inconveniences that may have been encountered

“The maintenance will disrupt some of the services offered through the online portals. Normal services will resume on February 6th, 2019,” adds the Placement Service’s CEO.

A spot check on the three portals; Students’, Principal’s and Institution, returned an error as the web pages were not available.

On 15th October, 2018, the Placement service opened the online application portal to all school Principals to upload course choices submitted by the 2018 KCSE examination candidates in their respective institutions/ centres. The portal was closed on 5th January, 2019 after the deadline had been extended from the earlier date of 31st December, 2018.

The portal allowed the 2017 KCSE candidates (who had already been selected for courses in universities or colleges under Government sponsorship) to transfer to other institutions and/ or courses of their choice.

The number of 2018 KCSE candidates who managed the minimum university entry grade rose by about 30 percent from the previous year, 2017. Strict Course requirements on KUCCPS lock out many KCSE students from ‘preferred’ courses.

Many students who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams last year are crying foul after stringent requirements locked them out of preferred courses. The students who are currently making their courses choice via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, are unable to select given courses due to ‘high’ cluster and subject requirements. Students wishing to enroll for teaching courses have been met with a rude shock as the bar has been raised. For example, to enroll for a degree in Bachelor of Education Science one is expected to have scored a minimum of a C (plain) in both English and Mathematics at the KCSE exams. This is on top of the cluster requirements set by various universities. For this degree Kenyatta University has set the highest cluster at 34.996, while Baraton university has the lowest cluster requirement of 23.001. One must have also garnered a minimum of a C+ (plus) for both the mean grade and the teaching subjects.

Things are not any better for students wishing to enroll for a degree in Bachelor of Education Arts as they are expected to have scored a C (plain) in English and a D+ (plus) in Mathematics. For this course, Kenyatta University has set the highest cluster of 30.251, while the University of Eldoret has the lowest cluster requirement of 24.11.

POOR PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY THE BANE OF MANY STUDENTS.

The general low performance in Biology at KCSE by many students has come back to haunt them big time. Students who failed to clinch a C+ (plus) in Biology are most hit as they can not enroll for a medicine/ health related degree course. For instance, a student with intentions of enrolling for a degree in Nursing must have a C+ (plus) in Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics and English or Kiswahili. The highest cluster for this course has been set at 39.905 and the lowest cluster at 28.044.

These are the other degree courses’ Minimum subject requirements:

  • Law: B (plain) in English or Kiswahili
  • Bachelor of Education (Special needs Education): C (plain) in English/ Kiswahili, C+ in Biology and a C+ (plus) in either Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Geography.

Students applying for the Courses are expected to pay Kshs. 1,500; if applying for the first time. The money is paid to the KUCCPS pay bill number that will be provided during the application process at https://students.kuccps.net/login/. The students have up to the the 23rd of February, 2019 to select or revise their courses.
