Full list of KICD approved Grade 4 Text books for teachers and learners; Textbook name and publisher

The Ministry of Education in collaboration with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and Kenya Publishers Association have finalized the approval of Grade 4 CBC course books that will be used from January 2020 when term one commences. The Ministry at the same time has released guidelines to schools on how the Competency Based Curriculum, CBC, is to be implemented at Upper Primary School Level (Grade 4-6). Schools, parents and members of the public are cautioned that the use of non-approved KICD curriculum support materials in schools is in contravention of Section 27 of the KICD Act of 2013. The government of Kenya has purchased a course book for each of the learning areas that will be delivered to all public primary school in the country. The course books are being adapted for learners with special needs.

Government supplied books will have the following security features; the Coat of Arms and ‘Not for sale’ caveat on all printed pages to ensure integrity and retention of the books in schools. The approved list below is also available on KICD website; https://www.kicd.ac.ke

Ministry of Education rolls out the 2019 Teachers’ ‘Tusome’ training programme

The Ministry of Education has announced a ‘Tusome’ Early Grade Literacy Training Schedule for Term one next year, 2019. The Ministry is implementing the Tusome Early Grade Literacy Programme with financial support from the USAID whose work advances U.S. national security and economic prosperity, demonstrates American generosity, and promotes a path to recipient self-reliance and resilience.

This training is geared towards equipping early grade teachers with necessary skills in readiness for the roll out of the Competency Based Curriculum, CBC, next year. “The Early Grade Literacy Programme instructional materials for Grades 1,2 and 3 in both English and Kiswahili have been reviewed in conformity with (the) Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and approved by KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development,” reads a circular by the Ministry’s Elyas Abdi for the Principal Secretary.

The Circular dated 21st November 2018, and sent to all County Directors, outlines the training programme for Trainer of Trainers (TOTs), Curriculum Support Officers, Head Teachers and Teachers. “To ensure effective teaching with the use of the reviewed instructional materials, the Ministry has organized training activities for TOTs, Curriculum Support Officers, Head Teachers and Teachers to be held from 3rd to 21st December 2018 at Nakuru and County level,” says the Education Ministry.

The trainees’ travel, subsistence and training costs shall be fully paid by the USAID. “The Objective of the training is to equip them (the trainees) with pedagogical knowledge and skills towards effective delivery of both English and Kiswahili lessons in Grade 1, 2 and 3,” adds Mr. Abdi.

In the released Training Schedule, by the Ministry of Education:
  • Trainers of Trainers, TOTs, shall have their training in Nakuru from 3rd to 4th December, 2018,
  • Curriculum Support Officers, CSOs, will be trained at respective County levels from 10-11th December, 2018. While,
  • Head Teachers and Teachers shall have their training done at the Zonal Levels between 14th and 21st December, 2018.

Submit your views on CBC curriculum reforms- Education Ministry tells Kenyans

The Cabinet Secretary for Education through a Gazette Notice No 5328 of 21- June, 2019 constituted A Taskforce on Enhancing Access, Relevance, Transition, Equity and Quality for Effective Curriculum Reforms Implementation.

In compliance with the requirements of Article 10 (2) of the Kenya Constitution on public participation and the requirements of Article 4 D) of the Basic Education Act, 2013, the Taskforce is currently receiving views from stakeholders to inform the implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

The Taskforce is therefore requesting for submission of memoranda from individuals, public and private institutions, and all interested parties. The memoranda should address the following areas:

1). Strategies for implementation of Senior Secondary Pathways:
2). Conceptualization of competency based pre-service teacher education, Design and implementation of Values-Based Education, Community Service Learning and Parental Empowerment and Engagement programmes;
3). Transition from Basic to Tertiary education and training, and;
4). Any other issues that the Taskforce needs to consider for effective curriculum reforms implementation,

The memoranda should also take into consideration Special Needs Education (the gifted and talented, learners with disabilities, the vulnerable and learners with learning disabilities).

The memoranda should be sent to the Chairperson Taskforce on Curriculum Reforms Implementation, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development; PO Box 30231-00100 Nairobi on emailed to; cbctaskforce a kicd.ac.ke or hand delivered to KICD main reception by Friday, 4th October, 2019.
