KMTC Campuses Receive Vehicles

KMTC Campuses Receive Vehicles

It was jubilation at the KMTC Headquarters in Nairobi during the commissioning of nine vehicles for various KMTC Campuses.

“These vehicles will ensure students access their clinical training sites with ease, where they augment health service delivery to the local communities in the course of their training,” KMTC Board Director Mr. Fred Wamwaki, representing the Board Chair Amb. Zachary Muburi-Muita, said.

The nine vehicles, four double cabin utility vehicles, four buses and one ambulance will go to Thika, Kaptumo, Kuria, Iten, Kabarnet, Othaya, Busia, Webuye and Nairobi Campuses.

“The Board is committed to addressing resource gaps in the College to continuously enhance efficiency and subsequently quality of training,” Mr. Wamwaki added. In line with this, he reported, the Board has put in place plans to equip all Campuses with vehicles to strengthen transport system across the College.

He further indicated that the Board was keen on leveraging on technology in the College to ensure efficient use of resources available.

CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch thanked the Board for enabling the College achieve its mandate. “These vehicles will go a long way in enabling KMTC maintain its quality of training considering 70 percent of the content is hands on,” he remarked adding “our students will now have easier access to their clinical areas and practicum sites.

Dr. Oluoch noted that in addition, the buses would enable students take part in co-curricular activities.

In the last eight months, the College has purchased 21 vehicles to go towards enhancing teaching and learning in various Campuses. As at now, the College fleet stands at 140 vehicles which includes one ambulance that will be key in student’s learning.

It is expected that in the next few months, the remaining Campuses will each receive a vehicle as KMTC moves to ensure all its Campuses across the country are fully equipped to the required standards.

Diploma in Health Promotion is a course offered the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC). This course takes three years.

Entry Requirements for Diploma in Health Promotion

To pursue this Course you must meet the following minimum requirements:

KCSE Mean Grade of C,
C in English or Kiswahili and C- in Biology/ Biological Sciences,
D+ in any one of the following: Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science or Chemistry

KMTC seeks to enrol and graduate applicants who will develop and grow educationally and personally and will contribute to the College community, and the broader society.

To that end, the role of the Admissions and Records Office is to recruit, admit, and encourage enrolment of applicants who are spiritually mature, academically excellent, accomplished in extra-curricular endeavours, and broadly diverse through individualized review and professional judgment.

Applications:

All applications are ONLINE from the application portal on this website www.kmtc.ac.ke.

The prospective candidates apply for admission into courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category.

The Regular category have subsidized fee with optional accommodation but no choice for campus while the parallel category have non subsidized fee, no accommodation option but have option for campuses choice in more than sixty five (65) campuses situated in different parts of the country depending on the courses.

Application Procedure:

Prospective candidates are expected to visit the applicants’ portal, read the advertisement to know the various courses and their specific entry requirements.
Candidates interested in making an application are advised to READ the application guidelines (preservice/Inservice) available on the application portal
Candidates are advised to follow the steps carefully given in the application guideline to the end to be sure of application success.
Take note that the application period has timelines as stipulated on the advertisement please observe them

Background Information

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nyamira Campus is located in Nyamira County adjacent to Nyamira Level 5 Referral Hospital, five kilometers off Kisii, Kericho Highway along Nyamira- Miruka road. The Campus, which sits on a five-acre piece of land, started in March 2012 to address the community’s high morbidity and mortality due to the influx of highland malaria and reproductive health related conditions.

The Kenya Medical Training College invites applications from qualified candidates for admission into Medical Courses for the academic year 2022/2023 – SEPTEMBER 2022 PRE-SERVICE & IN-SERVICE INTAKES and 2022/2023 – MARCH 2023 IN-SERVICE INTAKE in our campuses situated in different parts of the country.

The successful candidates will join the College in September 2022 and March 2023. All applications shall be made ONLINE with an application fee of Kshs. 2022 payable via MPESA pay bill No. 964150 following the procedure outlined on the KMTC website (www.kmtc.ac.ke).

KMTC Manza Campus is located at Kenya Israel Shopping Centre, four kilometers from Machakos town along the Machakos – Nairobi road. The Campus’ history dates back between 1955 and 1956, when the Rural Day Primary School for European children was established.

When the number of European children attending the school dropped after independence in 1963, the Israel Government started a Social Workers’ (SW) course at the popularly known Kenya Israel School. The training continued until 1972 when the SW course was transferred to Kenya Institute of Administration (KIA).

In 1976, the Ministry of Education handed over the buildings to the Ministry of Health for use by University of Nairobi medical students who were studying rural medicine. Later, it began to train Registered Medical Assistants (Clinical Medicine Officers).

In 1979, the first certificate class of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) students (Public Health Technicians) was admitted into the Campus. Being spacious, in September 1991, the KMTC Nairobi Campus identified it as an ideal place to train its third-year Clinical Medicine students who were undertaking practicals at the then Machakos General Hospital.

In 1998, the certificate course in Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) was phased out and a diploma course introduced. In 2006, a three-month certificate course in Community Health Development (CHD) was introduced. The Department of Pharmacy was established in 2009, admitting its first-year class, while Medical Imaging Sciences department admitted its first class in September 2012.

Health Records and Information Technology is the newest department having admitted its first certificate intake in March 2016 and in September 2018 admitted its first upgrading certificate to diploma.

The Campus has reintroduced CHD course and intends to further introduce more programmes.

KMTC Homabay Campus (Physical location, Courses, Requirements, How to apply and Contacts)

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Homa Bay Campus was established in 1979 to train Enrolled Community Health Nurses (ECN). In 1998, ECN was upgraded to Diploma in Community Health Nursing at the Campus.

This led to the phasing out of the pre-service training for enrolled nurses in 2002 and the introduction of other programs at diploma level.

Student Population

From a class of 12 students in one certificate programme, today, the institution has more than 870 students in four different departments: Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nutrition.

Clinical experience sites

Clinical experience sites for our students include: Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, and other approved health facilities within and outside the county. Mission hospitals such as Kendu Bay and St. Mary’s Hospital in Mumias also provide the requisite learning facilities.

Clubs, Societies and Sports

In an effort to make an all-round health professional, KMTC HomaBay Campus will nurture your interest in service to God and humanity through various religious organizations and societies. It organizes yearly inter-denominational prayer day to bring students together.

Students sporting activities include athletics and field events, ball games such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, and netball. Indoor games like darts, chess, scrabble among others are also available.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) club, engages with NACADA to help our students in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

KMTC Diploma Courses and Qualifications

The following is a list of all KMTC diploma courses and their qualifications. We will later look at the entry requirements for each course. Keep it here.

Some diploma courses have an admission requirement of at least C minus while others require at least C plain in KCSE. Diploma courses take two years to complete.

Diploma in physiotherapy.
Diploma in mortuary science.
Diploma in medical engineering.
Diploma in health promotion.
Diploma in public health.
Diploma in medical social work.
Diploma in occupational therapy.
Diploma in community oral health.

Diploma in orthopaedic technology.

The following are all KMTC courses offered at the diploma level and their qualifications requirements. Note that the lowest requirement is a mean grade of C minus while the highest entry requirement is a mean grade of C plain.

Every diploma course has specific subject requirements apart from a diploma in mortuary science.

KMTC Holds 91st Graduation Ceremony, Releases 15,915 Medics into the Health Sector

Nairobi, December 2, 2022 – The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) during its 91st Graduation Ceremony held on December 2, 2022 released 15,915 fresh graduates ready to meet the health workforce gaps. Of this number, 692 were awarded Higher Diplomas, 8,235 Diplomas, and 6,988 Certificates.

The event presided over by Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Ms. Susan Nakhumicha Wafula, saw the highest-ever number of graduates in the history of the College given the power to put their training to work.

Giving her remarks, the CS observed that KMTC has been making great strides in the field of health care service delivery, “Anyone making contact with a health provider in this country and beyond, will most probably be attended by a KMTC graduate. I am proud to be a KMTC Alumna,” she said.

Referring to the Bilateral agreement between Kenya and the United Kingdom (UK) on exportation of health professionals to work in the UK, the CS reported that the country’s health workforce and especially nurses are now migrating to work in other countries and the Ministry is spearheading efforts to create more international job opportunities for other cadres as well. “KMTC thus has to be intentional in creating training opportunities responsive to both local and global market needs,” she stated.

Ms. Wafula further outlined that the Ministry of Health is harmonizing and implementing several policy reforms and programs in the health sector. These include the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Health Insurance subsidy programs for the poor and vulnerable households. “The revision of the UHC benefit package will allow Kenyans covered under NHIF to enjoy more services,” she added.

In addition, this year’s graduation comes against the backdrop of the recent equation of the College’s Higher National Diploma Qualifications to University Bachelor’s Degrees.

Referencing this milestone, KMTC Board Chairperson Amb. Zachary Muburi-Muita reported that “Our quest to continually supply a quality global health workforce recently received a boost after certification by the Kenya National Qualification Authority (KNQA).”
Amb. Muita affirmed that the equation could not have come at a better time as the KMTC graduates are ever linked to training and career opportunities both in and outside the country.

On the same note, the Chairperson stated that “to demonstrate that the College is indeed the preferred health training institution nationally, on a yearly basis, we receive over 30,000 applications and continue to train students admitted to universities but who chose to pursue KMTC programs, even as we seek to expand our capacity to train as well for other regional countries.” Adding: “During clinical placement and community engagement, the over 50,000 students in session work closely with the rural and urban populations, therefore, improving the health outcomes of the country.”

To increase access to training opportunities for all, Amb. Muita announced that the College had joined hands with the Higher Education and Loans Board (HELB) to launch an education fund for KMTC students. “So far, the National Treasury has approved a figure of Kshs 680 million funding towards this scheme, of which, Kshs 226.6 million has already been disbursed as part of the allocation,” he added.

The College’s Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch conveyed that the decision to hold a virtual graduation, with minimal physical participation, had been informed by the threat posed by the Ebola outbreak and reports of a renewed upsurge in Covid-19 cases, and subsequently for the safety and dignity of KMTC students, graduates, their families, staff, and the general public.
He confirmed that “in line with this year’s theme of “Sustainable and Comprehensive Training towards a Responsive Health System”, the Graduands are well trained, examined, equipped with a diversity of skills and competencies to serve in any part of the world.”

In addition, Dr. Oluoch disclosed that “in order to take care of our increasing and aging population, strengthen Primary Health Care and how communities can access health services, the College has collaborated with partners to offer training for Specialized Cadres, Community Health Volunteers, Community Health Assistants, Community Health Extension Workers, Life Support as well as Emergency Medical Technicians.”

Having been started in 1927 with four students at the Kenya School of Administration, the College has a current student population of 54,000 students undertaking 93 courses in 72 KMTC Campuses spread out in 44 out of the 47 Counties. The College currently produces 85 percent of middle-level healthcare workers in the country and will be celebrating its 95th anniversary in 2023.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kabarnet has announced plans to open a satellite Campus in Tiaty Constituency in Baringo County.

Speaking during a ground breaking ceremony for Kshs 12.8 million hostel block, Friday (July 2, 2021), KMTC CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo confirmed that Chemolingot Satellite Campus will be opened in September this year.

“We will start with the first course in Community Health where we will admit the first group of 200 students,” he said.

“As expansion work goes on, we will progressively build programmes to include Nursing, Clinical, Medicine, and Pharmacy,” he added.

The College is eyeing the establishment of the Satellite Campus as one possible tool to promote national cohesion.

“We are committed to promoting unity among communities. Besides enrolling local communities, this Satellite Campus will also attract students from across the country and thus promote cultural diversity in this region,” said Prof. Kiptoo.

“By producing more health workers for the region, we will greatly strengthen health systems and add to the fight against diseases like malaria,” he added.

Tiaty MP. Hon. William Kamket welcomed the announcement, terming it a good gesture that will set the pace for transforming the region.

Tiaty National-Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has allocated more than Kshs 10 million towards the construction of classrooms, Skills Laboratories, ICT rooms, among other development projects.

KMTC Kabarnet was established in 1991 and currently has a population of more than 900 students.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Rera Campus was started in September 2015 with support of the KMTC Board of Directors, National Government – Gem Constituency Development Fund. The Campus is situated in Gem Sub County of Siaya County about 50kms west of Kisumu Town off Kisumu-Bondo road.

Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology (upgrading)

Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics

Facilities

Classrooms and ablution block,
A well-stocked library
A Computer Lab and
Student hostels.

Student population

The total student population is 270 with the number expected to increase in the next intake.

There are active clubs in the Campus that include:

Young Christian Association
Seventh Day Adventist
Muslim Association

For sports, students participate in ball games and athletics.

KMTC seeks to enrol and graduate applicants who will develop and grow educationally and personally and will contribute to the College community, and the broader society.

Applications:

All applications are ONLINE from the application portal on this website www.kmtc.ac.ke.

The prospective candidates apply for admission into courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category.

Application Procedure:

Prospective candidates are expected to visit the applicants’ portal, read the advertisement to know the various courses and their specific entry requirements.
Candidates interested in making an application are advised to READ the application guidelines (preservice/Inservice) available on the application portal
Candidates are advised to follow the steps carefully given in the application guideline to the end to be sure of application success.

About KMTC

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is a State Corporation established through an Act of Parliament under the Ministry of Health, entrusted with the role of training various disciplines in the health sector to serve the Kenyan interests, East Africa and beyond.

The College has 72 Campuses strategically located in various parts of the country. The Graduates of the College account for more than 85% of the local middle level workforce in the health facilities in Kenya.

KMTC Governance

The College operates as a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency (SAGA) under a Board of Directors, headed by a Chairperson, whose role is to provide overall leadership and direction of the College as well as oversight on all Management operations.

The Board has appointed a Chief Executive Officer, who is charged with day to day running of the College.
