Technical and Vocational Education Training, TVET, institutions offer various certificate, diploma and craftsmanship training to students in Kenya. The beauty with TVET training institutions is that they offer flexible entry and fee requirements to students wishing to study in these institutes. TVETs are registered, accredited and regulated by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA); which is a public corporate agency established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013 to regulate and coordinate training in the country through licensing, registration and accreditation of programs, institutions and trainers. Section 7 of the Act, 2013 gives the powers and functions of the Authority to regulate and coordinate training; inspect, license and register and accredit training institutions; accredit and inspect programmes and courses; promote access and relevance of training programmes; determine the national technical and vocational training objectives; assure quality and relevance in programmes of training among other functions.

How to get placement

To get a place at a TVET institution, one has to apply via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The available programmes, institutions, minimum entry requirements and the application procedure are always available on the KUCCPS Student’s Portal accessible through the Placement Service website www.kuccps.ac.ke. KUCCPS sets an application window within which the prospective students can submit their applications. The Entry requirement for all Diploma Courses is a C- and above; D (plain) and above for Certificate while other course categories are open.

Funding

The good news for students joining TVETs is that they can now apply for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB. They can now get Loans and Bursaries from HELB for their fees payment and upkeep.

HOW TO APPLY FOR TVET BURSARIES FROM HELB

Students pursuing Diploma and Certificate courses in Public universities, university colleges, public national polytechnics and Institutes of Technology and Technical Training institutes country-wide are eligible for this loan and bursary from HELB. Orphans, single parent students and others who come from poor backgrounds will be given priority for the loans and or bursaries.

Required Documents

  1. Applicants should access and fill the relevant TVET Loan & Bursary Application Form (TLAF) at the HELB website.
  2. Print TWO copies of the duly filled Loan Application Form.
  3. Have the TVET Loan Application Form signed and stamped by the Dean of Students/Financial Aid Officers.
  4. Retain one copy of the duly filled TLAF (Mandatory).
  5. Drop the TLAF personally at the HELB students Service Centre on the Mezannine One, Anniversary Towers or any of the SELECT Huduma Centers nearest to you.

TVET Institution Application

The TVET Authority accredits institutions and approves managers of institutions and new programmes.

Application Process

  1. Undertake a business name search from the Registrar of companies via Ecitizen
  2. Obtain a “letter of no objection” on suitability of the name from TVETA

In order to obtain the letter of no objection, present;

  • Reserved business name search
  • Invoice for the name search
  • Copy of KRA Pin for the Director(s)
  • Copy of ID for the Director(s)
  • Dully filled and signed BN2 form (Click here to Download)

3. Register the Business name with the office of the Registrar of Companies
4. Download the TVETA application Forms for accreditation of institution, manager, Trainer, approval of programs, foreign institution and checklist here.
5. Submit complete application documents to TVETA offices located at Utalii House 8th Floor.
6. An accreditation officer will check the documents and compute the amount to be paid. (TVETA Gazetted Fees)
7. You will then be required to pay the amount through MPESA or TVETA bank account below.

Acknowledgement
After making payment the applicant will complete a registration form in duplicate as evidence of having submitted their application. An acknowledgement letter will then be sent to the applicant.

Inspection and Assessment
1.The institution will be scheduled for inspection and a Team of assessors will visit and inspect the institution for compliance with set standards. Download the assessment tool here
2.The assessors will prepare an inspection report which will be presented to TVETA Board

 

Registration and Licensing
1. Resolution of the Board based on evaluation of the inspection report shall be;
i. Approve Registration and Licensing of the institution
ii. Reject the application
iii. Request the Institution to improve within a period of six months
2. The applicant is notified on results of the TVETA Board resolution within 3 months from the date of submission of a fully compliant application documents
3. TVETA will issue training License to qualified institutions and maintain a register of the institutions and programs approved.

ii. Ongoing registrations
iii. Institutions recommended for improvement

At this point, the accreditation process is complete, and an institution will be issued with a registration certificate and training license.

JKUAT, KAPS Collaborate to Enhance Industry-Academia Linkage

Technology transfer from both research and academia institutions is important for the commercial application of research. However, due to poor linkages with industry, very few research outputs developed by academia are transferred to industry for commercialisation.

To address this challenge and enhance commercialisation of innovations being churned out by academia, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the Kenya Airports Parking Services (KAPS) have signed a five year collaboration agreement.

The agreement will see the two establishments pursue joint research and development, and collaborate in Intellectual Property (IP) asset management thus addressing the explosive growth of intangible assets and their impact in society.

Under the collaboration, KAPS has already commenced equipping two laboratories in Big Data and Next Generation Technology which will be domiciled in the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS) and College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) respectively.

Speaking during the Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony, the Chairman KAPS, Eng. Eric Mwandia said he was confident that the collaboration will enhance the IP asset management of both JKUAT and KAPS thus boosting the commercialisation tenets of research outputs that academia grapples with.

“With the resources in the two laboratories, I am confident that we can apply the research outputs jointly developed to provide tangible solutions to our local problems,” said Eng. Mwandia.
Exchange of signed documentsKAPS will also offer industrial and exchange programmes opportunities for JKUAT staff and students with the aim of sharing and furthering the technical know-how of both parties.

KAPS Managing Director, Mr. Bonnyventure Saronge said the partnership will strengthen industry-academia symbiotic collaboration, where KAPS will benefit from early access to untapped talent and the JKUAT students will enjoy increased opportunities for learning and early exposure to the industry work environment.

While welcoming the team to JKUAT, Vice Chancellor Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, guaranteed the KAPS team that they had chosen the right partner who is committed to the partnership. She acknowledged that although the linkage between academia and industry exists, it was not optimal, hence, the poor commercialisation of innovations in universities.

“I hope the collaboration will give birth to patentable innovations that are not only beneficial for the two organisations but also the country at large,” said Prof. Ngumi.

Among the many activities of the collaboration is a hackathon dubbed Hatch Hack slated for November 8, 2019. The hackathon, an annual event for the period of the collaboration, is designed to bring out the best of ideas and brightest of students to solve problems through the use of technology such as Internet of Things, Automation, App development and Data Analytics.

  Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics.

  To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations.

  Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students.

ABOUT KMTC

Situated about three kilometers on the northern side of Nairobi city, Kenya, KMTC headquarters and the main campus, Nairobi, stand on a 20-acre piece of land, opposite Kenyatta National Hospital, along Old Mbagathi Road.

With over 34,000 students attending more than 70 medical courses, KMTC makes the biggest single contribution to the health sector in Kenya and is currently producing more than 8000 graduates every year for both the Kenyan public and private health sectors, accounting for more than 80 percent of the hospitals’ workforce.

The institution boasts of a highly qualified and experienced teaching and administrative staff. It has a strength of over 1,900 members of staff.

The national distribution of the College is its biggest uniqueness. With 65 constituent colleges spread throughout the country as far as Lodwar and Garissa, Loitoktok and Kisumu, the impact of the College in improving healthcare is felt in all parts of the country.

At KMTC, we offer a wide range of courses, from certificate to diploma to higher diploma, which reflects the institution’s responsiveness to the needs of our nation.

Entry Requirements:

To join KMTC to pursue a certificate course, you must have a minimum of C- with specific qualifications in cluster subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations. For diploma programmes, you must have attained a minimum of C with specific qualifications in cluster subjects. Upgrading courses require that a candidate has a certificate in a respective field while for higher diploma programmes, candidates must have attained a diploma course as per the following guidelines.

Technical and Vocational Education Training, TVET, institutions offer various certificate, diploma and craftsmanship training to students in Kenya. The beauty with TVET training institutions is that they offer flexible entry and fee requirements to students wishing to study in these institutes. TVETs are registered, accredited and regulated by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA); which is a public corporate agency established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act No. 29 of 2013 to regulate and coordinate training in the country through licensing, registration and accreditation of programs, institutions and trainers. Section 7 of the Act, 2013 gives the powers and functions of the Authority to regulate and coordinate training; inspect, license and register and accredit training institutions; accredit and inspect programmes and courses; promote access and relevance of training programmes; determine the national technical and vocational training objectives; assure quality and relevance in programmes of training among other functions.

How to get placement

To get a place at a TVET institution, one has to apply via the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS). The available programmes, institutions, minimum entry requirements and the application procedure are always available on the KUCCPS Student’s Portal accessible through the Placement Service website www.kuccps.ac.ke. KUCCPS sets an application window within which the prospective students can submit their applications. The Entry requirement for all Diploma Courses is a C- and above; D (plain) and above for Certificate while other course categories are open.

Funding

The good news for students joining TVETs is that they can now apply for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB. They can now get Loans and Bursaries from HELB for their fees payment and upkeep.

HOW TO APPLY FOR TVET BURSARIES FROM HELB

Students pursuing Diploma and Certificate courses in Public universities, university colleges, public national polytechnics and Institutes of Technology and Technical Training institutes country-wide are eligible for this loan and bursary from HELB. Orphans, single parent students and others who come from poor backgrounds will be given priority for the loans and or bursaries.

Required Documents

  1. Applicants should access and fill the relevant TVET Loan & Bursary Application Form (TLAF) at the HELB website.
  2. Print TWO copies of the duly filled Loan Application Form.
  3. Have the TVET Loan Application Form signed and stamped by the Dean of Students/Financial Aid Officers.
  4. Retain one copy of the duly filled TLAF (Mandatory).
  5. Drop the TLAF personally at the HELB students Service Centre on the Mezannine One, Anniversary Towers or any of the SELECT Huduma Centers nearest to you.

TVET Institution Application

The TVET Authority accredits institutions and approves managers of institutions and new programmes.

Application Process

  1. Undertake a business name search from the Registrar of companies via Ecitizen
  2. Obtain a “letter of no objection” on suitability of the name from TVETA

In order to obtain the letter of no objection, present;

  • Reserved business name search
  • Invoice for the name search
  • Copy of KRA Pin for the Director(s)
  • Copy of ID for the Director(s)
  • Dully filled and signed BN2 form (Click here to Download)

3. Register the Business name with the office of the Registrar of Companies
4. Download the TVETA application Forms for accreditation of institution, manager, Trainer, approval of programs, foreign institution and checklist here.
5. Submit complete application documents to TVETA offices located at Utalii House 8th Floor.
6. An accreditation officer will check the documents and compute the amount to be paid. (TVETA Gazetted Fees)
7. You will then be required to pay the amount through MPESA or TVETA bank account below.

Acknowledgement
After making payment the applicant will complete a registration form in duplicate as evidence of having submitted their application. An acknowledgement letter will then be sent to the applicant.

Inspection and Assessment
1.The institution will be scheduled for inspection and a Team of assessors will visit and inspect the institution for compliance with set standards. Download the assessment tool here
2.The assessors will prepare an inspection report which will be presented to TVETA Board

 

Registration and Licensing
1. Resolution of the Board based on evaluation of the inspection report shall be;
i. Approve Registration and Licensing of the institution
ii. Reject the application
iii. Request the Institution to improve within a period of six months
2. The applicant is notified on results of the TVETA Board resolution within 3 months from the date of submission of a fully compliant application documents
3. TVETA will issue training License to qualified institutions and maintain a register of the institutions and programs approved.

i. Registered and licensed institutions
ii. Ongoing registrations
iii. Institutions recommended for improvement

At this point, the accreditation process is complete, and an institution will be issued with a registration certificate and training license.

Umma University is happy to inform the first year (New) students who have been selected to join the University in the various degree programmes that they can now get access to their Letters of admission to the university. Congratulations for getting admission at University after your successful application. Students joining university are selected by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KCCPS. The students are selected after sitting their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examination and getting the minimum University entry requirement. The KCSE students must first apply to KUCCPS to be selected to preferred programmes. The students can apply at school level or apply individually during the first and second revision windows.

Once the applications are closed, KUCCPS then places the KCSE students in preferred courses depending on the student’s score, number of available vacancies against applicants among other selection criteria. In not satisfied with the University that you have been selected to join then you can apply for Inter-Institution Transfer.

The placement body then announces the selection results and students can access the admission lists and download their admission letters.

Egerton University Wins Prestigious Award

One afternoon in June last year while on an excursion on Lake Naivasha, the boat on which Joseph Nguthiru and his eight friends were riding got stuck in water hyacinth for close to five hours.

He further noticed that businesses depending on the water body were counting heavy losses, thanks to a thick mass of the choking invasive weed.

Among those affected were transport, fishing and tourism operators. He also realized the eye sore that was the plastic waste at the lake and he thought he could find a solution.

Nguthiru finally decided the best way out was to turn water hyacinth into something useful. That is how he came up with the idea of turning it into raw materials for manufacturing biodegradable alternatives to single use of plastics.

The invasive plant which is native to South America has been spreading rapidly across the world and has also walloped large portions of Lake Baringo, Athi River and Lake Victoria.

Nguthiru, 24, is partnering with Egerton University in the project that he says will go a long way in addressing the twin challenges of the invasive weed and plastic pollution at Lake Naivasha.

He says the innovation is not only a smart way to deal with solid waste menace, it is also a means to provide environmentally friendly packaging materials and paper that biodegrade within four months after being discarded.

“I was motivated to come up with the innovation to address the effects of climate change and water hyacinth in our lakes,” says Nguthiru who did undergraduate studies in Environmental Engineering at Egerton University from 2018.

Under the mentorship and guidance of Engineer Japheth Onyando, a Professor of Soil and Water Engineering at Egerton University, Nguthiru has teamed with fellow students, Charles Kinyua and Pascal Nabiswa and patented a business concept, Hyapak, that converts water hyacinth into biodegradable alternatives.

Hyapak start-up uses water hyacinth to make seedling wrappers, pellets (granules) that are an alternative to conventional plastic pellets used in manufacturing a variety of paper products such as gift bags, cards, books, envelopes and folders.

“We have never heard of anyone who has created a single biodegradable seedling wrapper. This is our original idea,” submits Nguthiru.

Kinyua adds: “We thought about converting our project into a more sustainable idea. The data we have collected in the past one year indicate that tree seedlings planted with hyacinth wrapper are growing faster.”

The trio has bagged a Sh 500,000 award after their innovation emerged top in Kenya Innovation Week (KIW). They plan to use the prize money to conduct enhanced research on Hyapak.

“The award has a great social impact and we thank Egerton University for their technical support. It is a mark of appreciation and translates a lot to the environment. It means as a youth, we can make a change that can reflect in the world,” says Nguthiru.

While presenting the award, Principal Secretary, State Department of Youth Affairs, Ismail Maalim, said the government was committed to support young innovators develop their ideas to full potential.

Maalim added: “Our tertiary institutions and youth polytechnics need to play a more active role in supporting an innovation ecosystem, especially through recognition of innovation that can be patented.

Commercial research is a common practice in most parts of the world where private sector partner with universities and technical training institutes develop innovations in sectors such as medicine and engineering, earning technical training institutes and universities extra income.”

Just three weeks ago, the Institution of Engineers Kenya (IEK) recognized the innovation as the best among young Engineers in the country.

Before pocketing the cash prize from Kenya Innovation Week, the trio had in March 2022, won Sh1.65 million award after emerging top in the third edition of the Total-Energies Startup of the Year Challenge.

They further won the East Africa Youth for Climate Action Award by Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and emerged second runners-up in the World Engineering Day hackathon earlier this year.

Kinyua indicates that he was inspired to study engineering by his love for innovation. “I have a passion for developing something new,” he says.

Nguthiru, who is an alumnus of Alliance High School, says their project aims at solving the plastic pollution problem, particularly around major water bodies and the water hyacinth menace.

“The main focus is offering sustainable solutions to the problem of water hyacinth and plastic pollution,” said Nguthiru, who chose to study engineering to find solutions to communal problems.

“I enjoy researching problems and exploring new technologies. Engineering has allowed me to meet new friends who are also interested in science and technology,” he adds, noting, engineering companies should partner with universities to help young start-ups reap from their ideas.

The weed is collected from the shores of Lake Naivasha manually by hand. The weed is then transported to Hyapak business premises at Egerton University’s Njoro Main Campus where it’s chopped using knives and then dried in the sun. It takes approximately 8 to 12 hours for the weed to dry but depending on the weather patterns it may take two days to be completely dry.

After it has dried, the weed is crushed using a pulping machine and mixed with water then suspended on a wire frame where particles are sieved and the remainder is used to make pulp. The pulp is then modeled into the desired product and dried.

One of the major challenges the students have encountered is inadequate capital to mechanize the production of the paper. “The whole process from weed collection to production of end products is largely manual,” notes Kinyua.

 According to Egerton University’s Director for Agro-Science Park, Professor Paul Kimurto, the troublesome weed has more than 20 uses, including making paper, furniture, strawboard, garden sets, silage, baskets, and fertilizers.

Kimurto adds that despite all the problems, water hyacinth has tremendous merits. It contains 64 per cent methane and can be used for biogas generation and for water purification.

It is also valuable in traditional medicine, mushroom bedding material, carbon black production, making of ropes, production of fibre boards, as animal fodder and fish feed, green manure, compost, and as an ornamental plant. 

 Kimurto who doubles up as the University’s Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization explains that as an organic fertilizer, water hyacinth produces pathogen-free rich compost (75.8 percent organic matter), which increases soil fertility, thereby improves the soil due to its low and narrow margin carbon: nitrogen ratio (C: N) of 1:24.3 with a lignin content of only 9 per cent compared with C: N ratio of 1:80 and lignin content of 17 per cent in wheat straw.

“Its roots can absorb plant nutrients and keep them into its trunks and leaves, which improves physical properties of soil, soil structure, ventilates the soil and makes it easy for water percolation,” he states.

Kimurto says it also naturally absorbs pollutants, including toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury, and strontium 90 (as well as some organic compounds believed to be carcinogenic) in concentrations 10,000 times that in the surrounding water.

“Water hyacinth can be used either as green manure or compost, which may be either ploughed into the ground or used as mulch to cover soil surface while growing crops. Currently in Kenya, many innovative farmers are replacing the expensive inorganic fertilizer like DAP, 23:23:0 and CAN with such manures from water hyacinth. The manure contains many trace elements  which are rarely found in inorganic fertilizers and help plants to be more disease resistant and enhances quality of produce mainly fruits and vegetables,” notes the don.

Kimurto, a crop expert recommends use of water hyacinth as source of manure as it will help reduce its environmental hazards like degrading water quality, curtailing reduction in water movement, clogging of irrigation, hindrance of water transport, blockage of canals and rivers, causing flooding as is the case in Kenya now.

Under the Obnoxious Weeds Act, the East African Community has outlawed the use of the hyacinth for commercial purposes, arguing that it would encourage the users to encourage its growth.

Hyacinth is euryhaline, that is, it tolerates both fresh and marine water, hence it spreads at an alarming rate in water bodies.

MKU university wins prestigious award for helping the less fortunate

Mount Kenya University (MKU) is the recipient of the Talloires Network Innovative Civic Engagement Award, 2020. The award winning project titled “Co-creation strategies for improving the health of children and access to safe water in a time of crisis” is part of the University Award for Innovative Civic Engagement, a program established by the Talloires Network in partnership with Open Society Foundations.

“After a competitive review process, the Selection Committee was impressed by the partnership, and wishes to recognize and support (Mount Kenya University) continued civic engagement work.” said Ms. Lorlene Hoyt, Executive Director, Talloires Network

The University Award for Innovative Civic Engagement aims to discover, learn from, and support the leadership of novel university civic engagement partnerships that connect universities and local communities in ways that contribute to more equal and more inclusive societies.

Mount Kenya University students in a past event jointly organised by MKU and partners for care

MKU has been awarded in recognition of the involvement of the students, staff and University leaders in implementation of community-based activities in Kenyan communities in partnership with Partners for Care (PFC).

The university said it would use the funds to expand the initiative including an additional 3,500 pupils infested with jiggers in Watamu, Malindi besides setting up handwashing units countrywide in the war on the coronavirus.

Some of the joint activities considered during the award process include distribution of over 10,000 water backpacks that provide access to safe water transport and storage for hundreds of thousands of people; treatment of over 1000 jigger infested pupils and eradication of jigger infestations in Marsabit leading to improved school performance; and involvement of students and members of staff in community outreach programs.

Anti-jigger campaigns in Marsabit and Watamu, safe water programme using the water backpack as well as the mobility programme. The joint activities are managed through a joint MKU/PFC committee of 5 members, 2 nominated by each institution and a committee chairperson nominated every two years by the head of either institutions on a rotational basis.

Mount Kenya University staff during a jigger eradication campaign held in Marsabit in conjunction with Partners for Care

The committee is currently chaired by Dr. Peter G. Kirira, Ag. Principal College of Graduate Studies & Research.As part of the award, the University will receive $20,000 to support distribution of water backpacks and hand wash units during COVID-19 pandemic in different parts of the country and to reach an additional 3,500 pupils with jigger infestation in Watamu, Kilifi County.

In addition, Talloires Network will sponsor a member of the University faculty to the Talloires Network Leaders Conference at Harvard University in September 2021.Other recipients of the award include Meridian Global University, Cameroon; Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico; National Autonomous University of Nicaragua and the University of Zimbabwe.

Little known Karumo Technical Training Institute was named the best performing tertiary institution in the country going by the just released ratings for the 2021/2022 financial year.

Tacked in the interior of the semi-arid Tigania West sub-county the institution beat odds to scoop the coveted price from a list of at least 135 other institutions.

The awarding ceremony took place during the release of the report on Evaluation of the Performance of Ministries, State Corporations and Tertiary Institutions for the 2021/2022 Financial Year presided by President William Ruto at KICC.

This, according to the institution’s Principal Ms Florah Kanyua who spoke during an event to celebrate the win, was not a mean achievement for the young institute which held its inaugural graduation ceremony two months ago.

Speaking to KNA, the elated principal said the main secret behind the remarkable performance was teamwork and dedication among all the members of staff in the institution.

“We are very glad that we emerged the best in the country in terms of performance contracting which incorporates various issues. We are not taking this for granted and we can only attribute it to teamwork, dedication and above all to God,” said Ms Kanyua.

She explained that in performance contracting, an institution is expected to set targets at the beginning of a financial year and at the end of the period, it is rated on the basis of whether it managed to achieve the set targets.

“In our case for instance, we achieved almost all the targets we had set in the year 2021/2022 starting with academic performance which we had set at 67 per cent but surpassed this to score 73 per cent,” said Ms Kanyua.

She added that they had also said that they will construct some classes which they did, as well as committing to giving internship opportunities to young people among other targets.

The institution’s overall performance stood at a mean score of 78 per cent.

“The key thing is that once we set the targets, we sensitise all the staff members on the same and so each of them is aware of what is expected of us to achieve at the end of the year.

We have seen this work because every trainer owns the exercise and we are attributing this to strong teamwork,” said Ms Kanyua.

She added that their qualified trainers who understand what is expected of them also set their individual targets which are usually higher than what they set in the performance contracting and this has helped them to meet their overall targets easily.

Location of the institution in a rural area, she added, is a plus to the institution as it gives learners a conducive environment for their studies.

“Unlike in the urban areas, this helps our students concentrate on their studies because once you have lesser obstructions you are able to perform well in classwork,” said Ms Kanyua adding that a secure environment, as well as disciplined students were also factors that contributed to their win of the award.

She added: “We also participate in co-curricular activities meaning that the institution is holistic which provides opportunities for those who perfect in these activities.”

Nevertheless, the institution has been facing challenges including lack of enough learning facilities as well as infrastructure, and inadequate water.

“Considering that our institution is a day school, we have no hostels despite having students from far flung areas. As a result, the students rent houses from outside and with the high demand the rent fee is also high. This forces the students to look for houses as far as six kilometers from the institution,” said Ms Kanyua.

She is requesting the residents to construct more houses to accommodate the increasing student population.

“I appreciate them since they have really tried to take up that initiative but I am encouraging them to do more,” she said.

She added that the institution has only 30 trainers employed by the public service commission with more than 70 others being under the board of governors which translates to a huge wage bill for the growing institution.

“If we have the 70 trainers absorbed by the government, we would channel the money we use to pay them to other development projects,” said Ms Kanyua.

She encouraged parents to take their children to such institutions regardless of the grade they scored in their secondary school examinations adding that they will end up being molded to important people in future.
