The latest news on JKUAT reopening dates

Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has issued a statement concerning the re-opening dates for face to face learning. The university’s students, just like in other universities, have been off campus as a result of Covid19 pandemic outbreak in Kenya.

In a presser, the university says the reopening dates have not been agreed. This comes after some reports in the media indicated that the university has released the dates after its Senate meeting.

“Our attention has been drawn to some fake news making rounds online and featuring in Opera News, purporting to suggest that JKUAT has announced re-opening dates for face to face learning. Please note that the report (attached) purporting to have been issued by JKUAT is fake,” reads a presser from JKUAT.

The university leadership says there was no Senate convened on Friday, 23rd October 2020 (as contained in the fraudulent circular), to set dates for reopening as alleged in the attached document.

“Such a meeting will only be held after an express directive from the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education. When official Communication regarding the reopening of the University for face to face learning is made, it will be published on our Official Website. We urge all students to await our official communication after the directive by the Government. ” Reiterates the University.

Most university are still offering their lessons via online platforms reopening for face to face learning may be a pipe dream; if the current spike in covid19 infections is anything to go by.

Other universities opted to only recall a section of the learners; more so those in their final year. For instance, at the University of Eldoret all fourth year and postgraduate students have been recalled. Also recalled are Engineering and diploma final year students.

Forensic audit mandated for Meru Polytechnic concerning missing Sh120m

Forensic audit mandated for Meru Polytechnic concerning missing Sh120m

Members of Parliament have mandated a forensic audit of Meru National Polytechnic in light of the purported loss of Sh120 million attributed to payroll discrepancies stemming from a malfunctioning Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

The Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education, led by Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami, is contemplating surcharging accountable individuals after uncovering that certain employees received triple salaries while others shared identification information.

During a session with Chief Principal Secretary Anderson Mutembei, who came to address Auditor General Nancy Gathungu’s findings, MPs characterized the circumstances as fraudulent and pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation. Even though the Sh12 million system is flawed, the institution persists in paying an annual maintenance cost of Sh800,000.

The committee’s vice-chairperson Anthony Kibagendi remarked: “We must perform a forensic audit on this system. There are numerous procurement concerns. We expect the institution and auditor general to reconcile everything and present a report within a fortnight. ”

Kibagendi urged that at the forthcoming meeting, Mutembei should bring previous principals, system vendors, verified bank statements of those receiving multiple salaries, the executed contract, and all senior executives.

Imenti MP Moses Kirima queried the total sum lost and the manner of errors when information was entered manually. Kiminini MP Kakai Bisau asked how one staff member was able to receive payments from different bank accounts.

The audit findings highlighted alarming issues: four employees possessing duplicate or absent KRA PINs, 17 workers with suspicious birthdates (some under 18 years old), and 143 employees with dubious contracts, including one spanning 33 years.

Furthermore, Sh1. 4 million was disbursed to an officer assigned to a subordinate role who continued receiving a higher salary.

Mutembei defended the institution, asserting that some mistakes like birthdates were rectified, while other procedures reverted to manual systems.

He recognized the issues with the system, expressing: “These mistakes were rectified. The system has presented us with significant challenges, which is why we’re in the process of acquiring a new ERP system. ”

Ranking of the best universities

When considering a university and study program, it’s important to take international rankings into account, but it’s crucial to approach them correctly. Knowing the types of rankings that exist, how they’re compiled, and how to interpret them can provide more objective information to make an informed decision.

Ratings are a valuable tool for comparing universities based on important criteria for applicants, such as the quality of teaching, student performance, language proficiency, and equipment availability. However, it’s important to note that not everyone’s ideal university will necessarily be the most prestigious or popular ones like Oxford or Cambridge.

Several authoritative rankings exist, and they may place universities in vastly different orders. However, it’s worth noting that the top 50 universities in most rankings overlap by 60-70%. While rankings are based on statistics and survey results, not all of their findings may hold true in practice. For instance, not every graduate from Ivy League universities will become a successful innovator or secure a high-paying job.

Types of ratings

Roughly speaking, rankings can be categorized into two types: global and national. Global rankings generally compare around 500 to 1500 universities worldwide, and there are around 20 well-known global ranking systems. Each ranking system has its own methodology, meaning universities may have different rankings depending on the system. A university could rank highly in one system based on its reviews, but lower in another system if it publishes fewer studies, for example.

National rankings are useful for those who have already decided on a country. Examples include the CHE University Ranking in Germany, The Complete University Guide in the UK, and Niche in the USA. There are more than 60 national rankings in total, offering a broader selection than global rankings. However, not all national rankings are of high quality or objective. Some are run by government organizations,ational rankings are useful for those who have already decided on a country. Examples include the CHE University Ranking in Germany, The Complete University Guide in the UK, and Niche in the USA. There are more than 60 national rankings in total, offering a broader selection than global rankings. However, not all national rankings are of high quality or objective. Some are run by government organizations, while others are run by private companies or media outlets. The latter may not have enough resources to provide accurate information and could be biased by offering higher positions to universities for money or by providing outdated or false information.

Both world and national rankings can have a specialization:

  • in the field of study: technical sciences, medicine, art, MBA, etc.;
  • by level of education: bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral studies, preparatory programs;
  • by a specific indicator: the number of employed graduates, reputation, research work, and so on.

How are university rankings compiled?

We will talk about popular world rankings and their methodology a little later. Here we propose to consider the key factors that influence the positions of universities.

Science and research

Perhaps the most important factor in rankings and the most misleading factor in choosing a university. The scientific potential of the university is evaluated according to several criteria:

  • publications in significant natural science journals;
  • citation of scientific works;
  • the number of university-related scientific prize winners.

In different ratings, these indicators range from 20 to 100% of the total score. They are of the greatest importance in the ARWU. In THE, the “weight” of publications and citations is 60% of all criteria. A little less attention is paid to it in QS Rankings – only 20%.

There is also a Webometrics rating, which ranks universities by the frequency of mentions and the number of publications on the Internet (only open access articles are taken into account). It is more objective than QS and THE, since it does not take into account the prestige of universities – it only looks at specific figures for scientific indicators. And still, the first places in it are occupied by Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, MIT and other well-known universities. But this is logical, because in their history they have produced hundreds of Nobel laureates and tens of thousands of revolutionary articles. They did millions of important studies, which attracted more funding, other brilliant scientists, and so on.

If you are really going to do postdoctoral research or study MRes (master’s degree in research) and PhD programs, then the factor of science and research will be one of the main factors for you when choosing a university. Otherwise, pay more attention to other indicators.

Student/Faculty Ratio‎

This is the ratio of the number of students to the number of teachers. In QS Ranking, it is 20% of the total score. The top lines according to the criterion are occupied by American and British universities, which is not surprising. The university system there is so developed that there are about 10 students per teacher, and 300 per professor at a European university. This factor is more important than it seems at first glance. After all, in most cases, a student will learn better information in a small room at a seminar than in a huge hall at a lecture. So it directly affects the quality of teaching.

The most prestigious universities in the world

In addition to the main ranking, Times Higher Education (THE) also publishes a reputation ranking of universities. According to the official website of the publication, it is compiled on the basis of the opinions of invited academicians. Researchers from 128 countries of the world, representatives of different scientific fields, receive a special questionnaire[4]. There are no other more objective criteria for creating a rating – only the personal perception of teachers. Whether to trust their opinion and THE is up to you, but it’s worth looking at the rating. At least to make sure – you will not see any new names there (with the exception of the University of Tokyo). If you need to earn money for training quickly – try Bet22.

Universities with big funding

Of course, university rankings in terms of academic performance are significant – they reflect the quality of education and student satisfaction. But still, they do not take into account some details that may also be important for students. For example, general financial investments in the development of the university. For students, this indicator means the possibility of receiving material assistance, and for those who plan to do science, it means good funding for projects, comfortable conditions for research, and high salaries. The wealthier the university, the more academics from all over the world it attracts.

The richest university in the world with a budget of more than 41 billion USD is Harvard. Yale (31 billion USD) and Stanford (29 billion USD) compete with him. The first two are in the notorious Ivy League. The average size of funds of American universities is 1.4 billion USD[5]. In addition to the United States, there are universities with large funding in Britain, Saudi Arabia and Singapore[6].

It is worth taking a closer look at the finances of the university if you plan to engage in scientific activities or are looking for large scholarships. The Ivy League, for example, thanks to its budget provides grants that can fully cover the cost of education.

Pioneer International University Approved Courses, Admissions, Intakes, Requirements, Students Portal, Location and Contacts

Universities are the highest learning institutions in Kenya and the World over. They offer training majorly in undegraduate and Post Graduate Studies. In Kenya, the Courses offered in the Universities must be accredited by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services, KUCCPS. It is the same body that selects and places students to higher learning institutions; Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. To qualify for University placement one must attain the minimum set Mean grade and particular course requirements. Each Course offered at particular university has its own cluster cut off points, though. Most university courses take a minimum of 4 years; while, some take even more. An academic year at the university takes two semesters of three months each. University students get fees loans from various organizations. Top on the list is the Higher Education Loans Board, HELB, that advances both loans and Bursaries. Universities run online platforms; portals and websites, where such services as admission application, online accommodation booking, E-learning, exams results downloads and many are provided to students, staff and the general public. On admissions, most universities have admissions in May and September for new students. Various learning modules are provided at the universities. These learning modules include: Full time, School Based, Distance Learning, Evening & Weekend classes and E-Learning.

New Medical Training College, KMTC, campus to be opened in Meru this September

Imenti South Constituency in Meru County is set to get a new Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, Campus that will open its doors in September 2019.

This was announced when the KMTC Board led by Board Chairman Philip Kaloki, MBS, accompanied by Director Mr. Mithamo Muchiri, CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo and Administration Manager Mr. David Ondeng on July 11th, 2019 visited Kanyakine Ward in South Imenti Constituency. The team was received by area Member of Parliament Hon. Kathuri Murungi and Kanayakine Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Mwirigi Karinga.

Hon. Karinga reported that 10 acres of land are available for establishment of the Campus and there is ready infrastructure to ensure that the Campus can start admitting students in September 2019. As a result of its proximity to the Kanyakine Level IV Hospital and availability of modern technology and various specialists in the Hospital, the MP said, the Campus will be able to offer courses in Nursing and Clinical Medicine, once all other requirements are met.
Prof. Kaloki confirmed that KMTC, with the support of the President Uhuru Kenyatta and Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, would ensure that the Campus is up and running. The Chairman added that an admissions desk officer from KMTC would be sent to the area to help qualified applicants with the application process.
He noted that the Hospital would support mounting of the other courses offered in the College. The Chairman further noted that the new Campus would open up the area and create business as well as employment opportunities for the locals.

The Chairman, in enumerating the College’s impact in Kenya’s health sector, reported that KMTC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with St. John’s Ambulance to train 26,000 Emergency Medical Technicians for the organization. This, he said, was proof of confidence in the quality of training offered by the College.

The community expressed their joy at the prospect of the new Campus and pledged to support it fully saying “the multiplier effect on the economy of the area will be immeasurable.”
