How to quickly check your KCSE results- Best Guide

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams mark the end of the four years of a student’s academic journey at high school. The Examinations are done in October/ November and marked in December every year. Once marked and analyzed, the candidates’ results are announced by the Education Cabinet Secretary.

Upon the release of KCPE and KCSE examinations, the candidates can access their results through varioous methods. One of them is by using the SMS number provided during the official release of results.

Another method is by using the various online platforms like visiting the KCSE results portal by Knec or the KNEC::KCSE Results Checker portal.

Examination Results Slips and Printouts

Each of the institutions that enter candidates for the KNEC examinations shall receive a hard copy of the institution’s examination results printout and result slips which captures the following information:

1. Institution’s Code and Name
This appears on the top left side of the printout.  The institution’s code is a unique number by which an examination centre is identified by the Council.  This is the number that an institution should always quote whenever communicating with KNEC.
2. Candidates Details
Below the institution’s name and code are details of the candidates.  These details include the index number of the candidate, year of examination, gender, individual subject grades and the mean grade.
The important features of the examination results are as indicated below:-

  • X – denotes an absent candidate. A candidate is declared absent if he/she did not sit for one or all papers in the examination.
  • Y- denotes that the candidate was involved in an examination irregularity. For the KCPE examination results, the symbol 00 indicates an irregularity;
  • P- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been pended due to infringement on the entry requirements for the examination e.g. incorrect KCPE details for entry in KCSE examination;
  • W– denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been withheld on suspicion that the candidate has been involved in an examination malpractice and investigations are ongoing;
  • U- denotes ungraded examination results due to infringement of the awards criteria.

Mean Grade Award Descriptions

  • Mean grade will be X, if a candidate is absent in all subjects
  • Mean grade will be Y , if one or more subjects are cancelled
  • Mean grade will be U, if the entry requirements for the KCSE examination are not met
  • Mean grade will be CRNM, if the course requirements for the Teacher education, Business and Technical examinations are not met
  • Mean grade will be P, if results are pended
  • Mean grade will be W, if the examination results are withheld;

The details of pended, withheld and irregularities are communicated to the institution through the Sub County Director of Education at the time of release of the examination results and are received by the institutions at the same time with the examination results.

Release Of Certificates

Once certificates for a specific examination are ready for collection/dispatch from KNEC, the institutions shall be informed through the mass and print media, Sub County Directors of Education and/or the heads of institutions:

  • All certificates for regular candidates are issued through the Heads of Schools/Institutions and to private candidates through the Sub County Directors of Education.
  • The Kenya National Examinations Council reserves the right to withdraw a certificate for amendment or for any other reason should this be necessary.

Secondary School Teachers Should not be contracted by Knec as Invigilators- Union says

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Homa Bay branch Executive Secretary has asked the Kenya National Examination Council to reconsider contracting secondary school teachers as KCSE exam invigilators.

Mr Stephen Yogo feared that the teachers might escalate exam cheating by using cell phones as some of them have covered the syllabuses in various subjects just like the examinees.

“When you are an English teacher for instance, then you see a student writing a wrong preposition, you might be tempted to correct the student,” he said.

The union secretary instead advised the examination body to hire the services of primary and Junior Secondary School teachers to invigilate KCSE exam to prevent cheating.

“If we do not want cases of cheating to increase, we advise they use primary school teachers and JSS teachers instead of secondary school teachers,” he maintained.

Concerning the ongoing retooling exercise of JSS teachers, Mr. Yogo said the union is in full support of capacity building adding that it gives teachers the capacity to perform their work to the best.

“However, I urge the body financing the exercise to pay the teachers instantly at the end of the retooling exercise, they do not have to wait for long,” said Mr. Yogo.

The Executive Secretary further informed that the union plans to embark on a tree planting initiative in schools to conserve environment.

He noted that they will sample schools in Homa Bay for purposes of planting and nurturing trees within their lands which will be named KUPPET Forests.

KUCCPS Announces Teacher Upgrade Training and TVET Intakes

KUCCPS Announces Teacher Upgrade Training and TVET Intakes as It Continues to Expand Higher Education Opportunities

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for teachers with P1 or Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificates to upgrade their qualifications to Diploma level. The upgrade programme is the newest student placement product by KUCCPS as it continues to expand opportunities for Kenyans to access higher education and training. This follows successful introduction of Kenya School of Law’s Diploma in Law (Paralegal Studies) on the KUCCPS application system, which attracted over 800 applications for 500 admission vacancies this year.

KUCCPS has opened its online placement application system for interested teachers with the certificate qualifications to apply for placement to Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE).

The teachers will select their preferred Teacher Training College (TTC), which will offer the programme through a flexible training schedule starting this month or during the November-December school holidays. To be eligible, the teachers must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The application opened on 6th August 2025 and will run continually with brief stops for processing of received applications. The initial deadline is 20th August 2025.

The initiative aims to enhance the skills of teachers holding P1 or ECDE certificates and empower them to meet the demands of the Competency Based Education (CBE) system whose implementation is ongoing. “The upgrade programme will ensure that there are no shortages of teachers who are well prepared to deliver the Competency Based Curriculum, especially at the lower levels of learning,” says KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome. “KUCCPS encourages all eligible teachers to seize the opportunity to enhance their qualifications and invest in the future of Kenya’s education system.”

Applications are to be submitted online through a dedicated KUCCPS portal accessible through the link: teachersupgrade.kuccps.ac.ke.
The Placement Service has also re-opened application for placement to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for September 2025 intake. The TVET application will run from 8th to 22nd August, 2025. To enhance access and uptake, KUCCPS has reduced TVET application fee from Kshs. 1,500 to Kshs 500.

For more information or assistance, contact KUCCPS Customer Service team through the email address info@kuccps.ac.ke or phone numbers 020 5137400/0723954927.

4-K clubs now to be started in schools; To get Sh2.2 Billion funding

President Uhuru Kenyatta has today unveiled the Shs 2.2bn Empowering Novel Agribusiness-led Employment (ENABLE Kenya) program, a youth capacity building initiative aimed at creating employment, generating income and bridging succession gap in agribusiness.

At the same event, the President unveiled the rebranded 4-K Clubs with a call to County Governments and stakeholders in the agriculture value chain to increase their support for efforts to empower the youth in agribusiness.

“In addition, I note with appreciation the prioritization of initiatives to build capacity in modern agribusiness technologies and to provide access to affordable and high quality inputs.

“I note also that numerous on-going agricultural projects have integrated components for the youth; and a number of them have been designed and specifically tailor-made for the youth,” President Kenyatta said.

ENABLE Kenya, funded by both the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB), seeks to build the capacity of 10,000 Kenyan young people involved agribusiness to enable them create employment opportunities for 50,000 others.

Besides training and capacity building, a large proportion of the Shs 2.2 billion ENABLE Kenya kitty will be disbursed to beneficiaries as interest-free loans amounting to Shs 500 million to finance start-ups, and Shs 900 million in low interest credit for existing youth enterprises.

Also included in the kitty is a Shs 800 million risk guarantee provision to buffer financial institutions that provide commercial loans to entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector.

Speaking at the launch of the two initiatives at Jamhuri Park in Nairobi County, the President said the 520 youth to be trained this month will each receive financing of between Shs 500,000 and 1.5 million as start-up capital.

He said ENABLE Kenya and 4-K Clubs fit into the various farmer empowerment initiatives being implemented by the Government among them the Aquaculture Business Development Programme that is being rolled out in 15 counties.

“To complement this pilot project, parallel efforts are in place to transfer aquaculture technology and build the capacity of the youth in schools by establishing aquaponics in learning institutions. Already, 40 schools spread out across the country have benefited from this initiative,” the President said.

The President cited the revival of Liwatoni Fishing Port in Mombasa County and the Shs 43 billion affirmative action programmes for women and youth that have so far benefitted over 4.7 million SME’s engaged in agribusiness as some of the measures the Government is taking in order to uplift young people.

“Ultimately, these efforts will go a long way to transform negative perceptions on agribusiness and make it more attractive to young people,” the Head of State said.

Alongside financing, the President said the Government had intensified capacity building for youth in agribusiness through the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme.

“Over the last five years, this initiative has led to the development and approval of more than 45 competency based education and training curricula for agricultural middle level colleges, on selected key value chains such as dairy, horticulture, poultry, aquaculture and agri-preneureship,” he said.

To encourage participation of school children in agricultural activities, the President directed school heads to start purchasing food items from 4-K and Young Farmers clubs.

“Further, the produce from the 4-K Club projects should form part of the supplies for the school feeding programme; which would be a tangible demonstration of the value and vitality of the projects,” President Kenyatta ordered.

Council of Governors Chairperson Martin Wambora, Agriculture CS Peter Munya, and his CAS Anne Nyaga also spoke at the event attended by several Governors, and senior Government officials among them Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua.
