Teachers with grade M and N to be deployed to administrative positions

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, will deploy classroom teachers with Job groups M and N to administrative positions in line with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA. Those with job group M and are teaching at Primary schools will now be appointed as deputy head teachers. Similarly, those with job group N and are teaching at Secondary schools will be appointed as Deputy Principals.

“You are hereby requested to submit the details of all teachers at Job group N and above to be deployed as Deputy Principals in Secondary schools and M and above to be deployed as Deputy Principals in Primary Schools,” says a circular by Rita W. Wahome, TSC Director in charge of staffing, dated 1st February 2019. This is information is to be collated by the TSC County Directors.

The Commission suspended the promotions of teachers upon attainment of higher qualifications, since 2014; causing a spat with the teachers’ unions.

This latest development comes after the Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, released a list of over 12,000 teachers who are yet to be promoted; even after attaining higher qualifications. Read full details, here: TSC yet to promote over 12,000 teachers

Part of the details sought by the Commission include: Name of teacher, TSC Number, Age, Denomination, Home County, current station and the mean scores garnered in the teaching subjects in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The County Directors are expected to submit the information to the head office by 8th February, 2019.

Last year, TSC revised the staffing requirements whereby Secondary school principals and their deputies were required to have a master’s degree in education; effective this year. Primary school head teachers and their deputies were also required to have a minimum of a first degree in education.
