KMTC Thika Campus: Courses, Fees, Location, Contacts and Programs plus Requirements

KMTC Thika Campus

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Thika Campus is adjacent to Thika Level 5 Hospital within Thika Sub County in Kiambu County. The Campus was started in 1969 with 30 students undertaking a certificate course in Enrolled Community Nursing with the support from the Norwegian Government.

The Campus was built to train community health nurses at the enrolled level, giving training a comprehensive theoretical and practical training in general nursing, midwifery   and public health. The graduates were to serve in Kenya’s rural health facilities established after independence.

The first group of students were admitted in June 1969 and officially opened by the first President of the republic of Kenya H.E Mzee Jomo Kenyatta on 16th November 1969.

It was run by personnel from Norway between 1966-1973 who included a Director and three tutors. Three Kenyan Nurses (clinical instructors) were appointed together with the Norwegian personnel. The first class had 35 students but subsequent intakes increased to between 40-50 students yearly.   Up to 1980, only female students were admitted and were accommodated in the former Director’s house that was modified for the purpose. In 1990, the Nursing Council introduced a competent based curriculum and the intake was reduced to 35 students a year, with the course taking two and a half years to complete.

In 1998 another programme, Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (an Upgrading Course) was started. In March, 2005 the Campus begun a Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing course in clinical Medicine. Lukresia Robai- Latest news on the Kitale Dancing Nurse

Miss Lukresia Robai, a 2nd year Nursing student at KMTC Kitale Campus has left netizens marveling after a video of her dancing for a young patient in the pediatric ward at Kitale Level IV Hospital went viral.

The video that has garnered over 200,000 likes and thousands of shares, and growing, has brought to the forefront the need for holistic care in health.

“As a Nurse, I recognize that the goal of nursing care is to alleviate pain, meaning non-pharmacological therapy is as important as giving medication to achieve this goal” , Robai says. She adds, “I would like to challenge my peers to consider healthcare from all dimensions. The possibilities are limitless so always think outside the box.”

The charming Miss Robai is passionate about serving humanity in her role as a Nurse. “Being a Nurse brings me joy,” she quips. She believes that there is no better way to serve than to use her prowess in dancing in combination with the skills she has acquired at KMTC to spread joy.

Lukresia says she noticed during her ward rounds that the boy admitted with a fractured leg was in low spirits and she instantly put on her dancing shoes and sway away to ‘’Baby Shark Do Do Do’’ – a popular song with toddlers

“I am passionate about dancing, it is inborn. It feels nice to be part of that society or culture that promotes wonderful things in this life. Especially when I’m giving medications, because hao ni watoto, I go to them with some kind of movement that is able to fascinate them,” Lukresia said.

Lukresia is an orphan who says her education journey has been a roller coaster, and she has only come this far because of bursaries and sponsorships. She takes her chosen career path very seriously, almost sacred.

“It feels nice to be part and parcel of people’s life. When you venture into medicine you are dealing with people’s health, you become a co-creator with God you have to take care of the sick and you have to be very careful because you are dealing with life,” she added.

Trans Nzoia County government has undertaken to pay the reminder of her school fees for the five months she has remaining on her course and has assured her that she will be posted in the same hospital where she lovingly dances to her patients., a dream come true for the 22-year-old

KMTC secures top spot in latest Webometrics Rankings 2024

KMTC secures top spot in latest Webometrics Rankings 2024

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has been recognized as the premier tertiary institution in Kenya according to the latest Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2024.

Claiming the third position overall, KMTC stands alongside Kenya Forestry Research Institute and Kenya School of Government in the first and second positions, respectively.

When raked alongside universities, KMTC has achieved an impressive 43rd position, beating famous institutions such as Africa Nazarene University, Multimedia University of Kenya, and KCA University, among others.

The University of Nairobi leads the list, followed by Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in the second position and Kenyatta University in the third place.

Upon receiving the results, KMTC Chief Executive Officer – Dr. Kelly Oluoch expressed his appreciation for the ranking, highlighting its reflection of the College’s dedication to excellence in medical education and training.

“Securing the third position overall underlines the commitment of our staff and students. This recognition solidifies KMTC’s standing as a leading institution in the country,” he said

“This milestone not only underscores our dedication to academic excellence but also highlights the global impact and influence of KMTC,” he added.

Dr. Oluoch reiterated the College’s commitment to shaping healthcare professionals’ future and advancing medical education in Kenya and beyond.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, also known as Ranking Web of Universities, evaluates universities globally based on a composite indicator considering web content volume and visibility.

Published by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Madrid, the ranking aims to enhance the online presence of academic and research institutions and promote open-access publication of scientific results.

Commencing in 2004, the ranking is regularly updated in January and July. As of 2021, it offers web indicators for over 31,000 universities worldwide.

Congratulations!
