St. Lawrence Egoji Teachers College was established in the year 1959 by the Catholic Diocese of Meru. It was founded by the first bishop of Meru Rt. Reverend Victor Bessone. It was initially started at Muthara in the current Tigania East Sub-county, 30 kilometres South of Meru town along Embu – Meru highway.
Soon after its inception, the college admitted the first twenty-five P3 teacher trainees. P2 and P3 courses were phased out in 1998. The P1 course introduced in 1966 was phased out in the year 2020. The college has successfully trained 25,038 teachers to date.
This effort has positively impacted on the education system in Kenya. The quality teachers produced have been employed within Kenya, East Africa and beyond. I proudly mention that the college does very well in both academic and co-curricular activities.
In academics, the college has been on an upward trend with the year 2020 breaking the record. The graduands attained 21 Distinctions, 304 Credits and 0 pass. Truly, the college ended the P1 course at a high note.
The quality of teachers is unquestionable “Teachers with a difference” In co-curricular activities, the college put up a very good performance with the graduands attaining over ten trophies in the Kenya music festival and the most coveted soccer trophy in the national ball games competitions.
The 2020 PTE marked the last group of the P1 teacher training. Nationally the P1 course was replaced by the Diploma in Competency Based Teacher Education (CBTE) curriculum. The college mandate has thus changed since June 2021 when the institution opened its doors to the first group of CBTE trainees.
The college currently is offering three teacher training programs; Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE). Upgrade in DPTE In October 2021, the P1 to Diploma upgrade course began. This was greatly appreciated by the college and also the P1 teachers.
