To this effect, Education Principal Secretary (Dr. Belio Kipsang) has issued a circular to education officials at all levels detailing on what they are expected to do in order to ensure successful roll out of the Curriculum. “As you are aware the Ministry of Education conducted the National Pilot on Competency Based Curriculum in all the schools in the country in pre-primary 1 and 2, as well as in Grades 1 and 2 in 2018,” explains Dr. kipsang.

In the Circular dated 2nd January, 2019, Dr Kipsang says the Ministry will be supplying materials for the new Curriculum this month. “Following the evaluation of the progress, it has been decided that the CBC be rolled out in all schools in Pre-Primary 1 and 2 as well as in Grades 1,2 and 3 in January, 2019. You are also informed that the Ministry will be distributing CBC materials (textbooks) in all the Public primary schools starting January 2019,” adds Dr Kipsang in the Circular copied to all regional Coordinators of education, County Directors of Education and Sub- county Directors of Education.

The Principal secretary instructs the education officials at all levels to undertake the following responsibilities; so as to enable successful and smooth roll out of the Curriculum:

  • Ensure that the rollout of the CBC starts smoothly,
  • Classroom observations are undertaken by field officers,
  • Ensure that core textbooks reach all the public primary schools,
  • confirm that all primary schools have CBC curriculum designs,
  • Ensure that only books approved by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum development, KICD, are used in all schools,
  • That there is seamless coordination between them (Education Ministry officials) and the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, Field officers,
  • and update the Director General and Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development on the progress made in the distribution of books.

It seems that it is all systems go, for now, as the Ministry finally sets the ball rolling after sending mixed signals on the fate of the new Curriculum roll out; towards the end of last year, 2018.
