“The gaming industry has been operating in an extremely challenging business environment for the past couple of months Sportpesa as a business has been subjected to punitive measures by regulators such as delayed license renewal and the suspension of paybill numbers with these actions considerably reducing the level of business operations.

This despite the existence of a court order prohibiting the regulator from taking such actions.
This has brought about immense pressure on the business necessitating a re-evaluation of some plans. In light of these developments, we regrettably wish to announce that due to the uncertainty of this situation Sportpesa will be cancelling sports sponsorships effective immediately. All clubs and partners will have received notices as provided for in their contracts.

Sportpesa is passionate about sports development in the country and this decision was regrettably arrived at haltingly and after a lot of deliberation and thought. We greatly value our partnerships and we will endeavour to resume support to the best of our ability when the business recovers.

Sportpesa has, over the last 5 years of operation, grown as a business that endeavours to create value for all stakeholders.
We have always been compliant with all the Statutory and Regulatory requirements. We are a law-abiding organisation.

For now, we remain positive that the current situation will be resolved amicably and urgently, and we continue to seek the goodwill of all actors towards normalising the environment for the gaming industry.”

End of the road! Sport Pesa’s latest reaction to BCLB’s move to block their shortcodes for deposits and withdrawals

Leading betting Company SportPesa is counting massive losses after the Betting Control and Licencing Board, BCLB, blocked their mobile money short codes used by gamblers for depositing and withdrawing funds. The betting company is highly disappointed by BCLB’s action despite the High Court order. They term the action illegal and malicious. SportPesa is among the 27 betting companies whose licences were suspended by BCLB.

This is the official statement from SportPesa;

‘SportPesa is extremely disappointed by the/recent malicious actions by Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) to block our payments systems despite the existence of a court order.

This is the latest in a series of abrupt measures from BCLB that only serve to discourage and disrupt business. The prejudicial process that has been followed by the regulator has the potential to drive the industry underground as well as have far reaching repercussions on the social and economic agenda of the country.

SportPesa has been fully compliant with all tax and legal requirements in
Kenya. Our business has uniquely and consistently boosted sports development in the country and we have not minced our support in
community investment. This as witnessed by our widespread impact in areas such as football, boxing, rugby and social projects involving water access, environment and skills uplift in the country.

These are now at severe risk following the measures taken by BCLB.

We wish to assure our customers and stakeholders that we are challenging these actions and remain in contact with key stakeholders with the aim of resolving this matter very soon.’
