Members of Parliament are tasked with explaining their decision to deny teachers a promotion.

The National Assembly Education Committee has been tasked with elucidating the rationale for its choice to dismiss the recent promotion of over 25,000 teachers.

KUPPET, under the leadership of Sabala Inyeni, Secretary General of the Vihiga branch, charges the Education Committee with making biased decisions and overreacting to their responsibilities, thereby further encroaching on the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) professional autonomy.

Inyeni additionally described the action as illegal and harmful to the morale and professional development of teachers nationwide.

Less than a week has passed since TSC CEO Nancy Mcharia was questioned by lawmakers when she announced the promotions of 25,252 teachers nationwide and sent the recommendation to the Education Committee for review.

The legislators questioned the equity of the selection criteria and the geographical distribution of those promoted.

The MPs, according to KUPPET Vihiga officials, are exploiting the recruitment and promotion of teachers to further their political careers in advance of upcoming elections.
