Ministry of Education Presser on time allocation for learning areas in the implementation of the new Curriculum

Ahead of the roll out of the new Competency Based Curriculum, tomorrow, the Ministry of education has given guidelines on how the curriculum will be implemented. The Principal Secretary to the Education Ministry, Dr Belio kipsang, has today released a circular to all Regional Coordinators of education, county and Sub- county Directors of Education detailing on how the new curriculum is to be implemented.

Here is the Circular by Dr. Kipsang dated 2nd January, 2019:

“RE: TIME ALLOCATION FOR LEARNING AREAS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EARLY YEARS OF EDUCATION (EYE)- COMPETENCY BASED CURRICULUM (CBC)

As you are aware the Ministry of Education conducted the National Pilot on Competency Based Curriculum in all the schools in the country in pre-primary 1 and 2, as well as in Grades 1 and 2 in 2018.

Following the evaluation of the progress, it has been decided that the CBC be rolled out in all schools in Pre-Primary 1 and 2 as well as in Grades 1,2 and 3 in January, 2019. You are also informed that the Ministry will be distributing CBC materials (textbooks) in all the Public primary schools starting January 2019.

In view of the above, all schools are hereby advised to make time tables and implement the CBC as follows:

  1. Each lesson shall be 30 minutes,
  2. There shall be five (5) lessons in a day in Pre-Primary and seven (7) for Grade 1 to 3.
  3. distribution of lessons in each learning area are as follows:

(a). Pre- primary
