|CS Migos: Mathematics Should Continue to Be Required in All Senior School Programs.
Following extensive discussions and input from stakeholders, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Migos has declared that Mathematics will continue to be a required subject across all senior high school courses under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
During a discussion held on Tuesday, CS Migos said that the majority of participants at the most recent CBC debate argued that mathematics should be a required course because of its fundamental importance in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in all fields.
“The majority of the stakeholders during the CBC dialogue were of the view that Mathematics should be compulsory in senior school,” CS Migos stated. “We have listened to your concerns, consulted with KICD, and reached a resolution that some form of Mathematics be made compulsory for the other two pathways that are not STEM.”
The CBC framework provides three options for upper school students: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Arts and Sports Science. The STEM track had previously placed a major emphasis on mathematics.
This change is meant to align instruction and make sure that all students, regardless of their chosen path, acquire fundamental numeracy abilities that are useful in both daily life and the modern workplace.
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) will provide more information about the curriculum development and implementation of the non-STEM courses in due time.
