In 1996 the high school was opened enrolling 27 boys in Form 1. The following year, it admitted girls. Currently, the school has four campuses: the Ngong Road (mother) campus and the Makini Junior Academy on State House Avenue in Nairobi; Makini Junior School Migosi and Makini School Kibos in Kisumu.

CS Magoha warns on NEMIS data

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has directed that his office be furnished with accurate data on number of schools and learners. Through a circular dated December 10, 2019, the CS notes that the actual number of all schools in the country is not known.

“It has come to my attention that the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education does not maintain accurate and reliable database on the number of physical schools and the actual number of pupils that can be relied on for effective decision making,” says CS Magoha.

Also read;

 For all details about other schools in Kenya, please visit the link below;

According to the CS, lack of accurate information has hampered effective service delivery in the Education Sector. He has thus directed all County Directors of Education to urgently compile data on the actual number of pupils in grade two (2) to eight (8). Also to be collated is data on the physical number of schools; both secondary and primary schools. “This information should reach this office (the Education Headquarters at Jogoo House; Nairobi) by Monday December 23, 2019,” the CS directs.

Schools are always expected to update the data on all learners and employees on the Ministry’s portal; National Education Management Information System (NEMIS). But, some schools may be having incomplete data. Data captured on NEMIS is used for disbursement of government fee capitation among other functions.

The CS now warns that schools with incorrect data will miss out on Fees Capitation and other government services. “This information is required for 2020 capitation and other critical decisions. It is reiterated that no institution shall receive capitation or any other Ministerial service without this data,” warns the CS.

Early this year, a number of schools missed capitation due to inaccurate data on NEMIS. The Ministry had to surcharge institutions that had exaggerated their learners’ populations.

All learners in public secondary schools receive government capitation of Sh22,244 per year. The Government disburses the capitation money on a ratio of 50 per cent for first term, 30 per cent in the second and 20 per cent for third term.

The insensitive KNEC; This is why teachers are furious with the Council over Exams administration

A section of teachers has been angered by the decision to use a hazardous chemical as one of the reagents during this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams. Teachers Manning the Chemistry practical exam castigated the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, for exposing them and candidates to Xylene; a known, poisonous, organic compound. After the Chemistry Practical that was done on Friday November 8, 2019 the teachers could not hide their anger; pouring to social media to condemn the council.

“Ifikie KNEC and TSC ( To KNEC and the Teachers Service Commission; TSC)

Xylene is carcinogenic and very harzadous☢♨🚯🚹🚺

I’m sure most of us here today (on Friday) witnessed the grave danger Chemistry teachers were exposed to during the KCSE Chemistry practical, Kuppet as our voice should not let this opportunity pass, use it to the advantage of science teachers,” wrote one teacher.

Principals have also raised concerns over the inflated cost of the chemical. “I spent close to Sh30,000 on this reagent (Xylene), alone. A litre was trading at Sh10,000 and given that I have 300 candidates (and each candidate required 10ml of the chemical) the school had to buy 3 Litres. What is so special with this reagent!” Wondered a school principal who sought for anonymity.

Of irritating to the Science teachers is also the failure by KNEC to recognize their supportive role in administration of the exams. Whereas other Professionals who are involved in exam administration are remunerated, teachers thronging the exam centres to prepare the exams walk home empty handed. “The Biology practical is slated for this coming Friday. I will spend a cool Sh3,000 to school and back home,” complained one teacher; involved in administration of the KCSE exams.

Back to Xylene

The hazards of xylene are well documented. Breathing xylene vapors in small amounts can cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. With more serious exposure, xylene can cause sleepiness, stumbling, irregular heartbeat, fainting, or even death. Xylene vapors are mildly irritating to the skin, eyes, and lungs.

The nervous system, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and kidneys are primarily affected by exposure to xylene. Effects due to exposure to Xylene include:

  • Labored Breathing
  • Impaired Pulmonary Function
  • Increased Heart Palpitation
  • Severe Chest Pain
  • Accumulation of Fluid in Lungs
  • Respiratory Depression or Arrest
  • Ventricular Arrhythmias

Symptoms of Xylene exposure include:

  • Eye Irritation
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Tremors
  • Incoordination
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach Discomfort
  • Impaired Short-term Memory
  • Impaired Reaction Time
  • Alterations in Equilibrium
  • Anxiety
  • Inability to Concentrate
  • Lack of Muscle Coordination
  • Death
  • Coma
  • Impaired Vision
  • Paralysis

List of delocalized, transferred teachers in December 2019- Busia County

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has effected the December 2019 delocalization exercise for school heads. The handing/ taking over exercise for the administrators is expected to be completed before schools open for first term on January 6, 2020.

Those moved are heads and principals and their deputies serving in their home counties and those who have served in the same station for a long period. Also on the move are new administrators who were appointed after the just concluded interviews .

Teachers with medical conditions have been spared from the ongoing delocalization exercise. Also spared are teachers aged above 56 years and those set to retire.

The Commission kicked off the delocalization exercise in January, 2018. Other massive deployments would then follow in April, August and December of the same year. Though in April, 2019 the Commission slowed down the transfers as only a handful administrators were moved.

Education Ministry orders 2148 schools closed, 2060 to be reaudited

The Ministry of Education has said a total of 2,148 schools were closed countrywide for failing to meet basic registration requirements. This follows an audit that was conducted in term 3 of 2019. The audit came in light of the Precious talent school traged where a classroom collapsed on the morning of Monday September 23, 2019; the accident at the school claimed the lives of eight learners.

Through a circular dated September 26, 2019 the Ministry had directed for immediate closure of all schools that do not meet the Set Safety regulations thus exposing learners to dangers.

“Following the infrastructure report received in this office (Education Headquarters), it was noted that 2148 schools were not registered and therefore were closed, while 2060 were marked for reassessment,” reads a circular from the Ministry; dated December 9, 2019.

According to an earlier circular by Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang; ‘It has been observed that some basic education institutions have been established without following due process. A number of institutions exist without registration certificates while others have failed to reapply for re-registration when their circumstances change… Most of those institutions do not meet the minimum standards required of them to be registered and some of them have infrastructure that are below standard and which pose danger to the learners.’

CLOSED SCHOOLS

In the just released audit report, the Rift Valley leads with the highest number of unregistered schools (at 583) and is followed closely by Nairobi Region which has 578 schools. Consequently, 488 schools were closed in the Rift Valley Region, while 356 of such schools were closed in Nairobi.

“You are required to ensure that all schools closed remain closed until they comply. They should be taken through the process of registration once they comply,” the Ministry orders Regional and County Directors of Education.

A total of 476 schools in the Rift Valley have been earmarked for reassessment. Nairobi, Eastern and Nyanza have 420, 415 and 356 schools; respectively. The Ministry orders that the schools reassessed for compliance as soon as schools reopen on January 6, 2020.

“You (Regional and County Directors of Education) should liaise with the Ministry of Interior at all levels to enforce compliance. Reports on action taken should reach the office of the Principal Secretary by 10th February, 2020,” adds the Ministry.
