Knec now postpones 2020 Diploma, ECDE and SNE, exams

The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has postponed the April 2020 Proficiency, Certificate and Diploma Examinations indefinitely. This following the directive by the Government for all learning institutions to close down to contain the spread of the current COVID-19 pandemic in the Country.

“The Kenya National Examinations Council wishes to inform you that the 2020 ECDE (Proficiency, Certificate and Diploma) Examinations scheduled to take place between 12th and 16th April, 2020 and the Diploma in Special Needs (SNE) Examination scheduled to be done between 12th and 23rd April, 2020 have been postponed until further notice,” reads a memo by Dr. Mercy Karogo who is the Knec Chief Executive Officer.

The order to suspend these examinations follows another one that postponed Business and Technical theory examinations that were scheduled to start on Monday March 23, 2020.

In the latest circular sent to all Sub County Directors of Education and Principals of Colleges offering 2020 ECDE and SNE Examinations, the Council Boss says new examination dates will be announced once colleges re-open. “The Kenya National Examinations Council shall review the directive from time to time and inform you of the new examination dates once colleges re-open. Kindly bring this information to the attention of all candidates registered for the 2020 ECDE and SNE examinations,” she adds.

Uncertainty continues to reign supreme as to when normalcy will ensue as the Government puts up a spirited fight against the lethal Coronavirus Disease.

The 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE,  has also been marginally affected with Knec postponing the uploading of the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) project marks for Group IV subjects. Knec had earlier set the deadline for uploading the projects’ scores and pictorial evidence for Milestone one to be 31st of March, 2020 while uploading of data for Milestone two would have been done between 15th June to 15th July, 2020. But, these deadlines now remain suspended until further notice.

Here is Faith Mumo the top student in KCPE 2020 exam

Top KCPE 2020 candidates- When Education Secretary Professor George Magoha announced the 2020 KCPE results, Faith Mumo (the best candidate) didn’t believe her hears. But, reality dawned on her that she had emerged top, scoring 433 marks. The young girl from Kari Mwailu Primary School in Makueni county says it hasn’t been easy preparing for this examination.

“I’m very excited and flabbergasted. I never expected to be number (in the KCPE 2020 exam). It has been hard during this coronavirus period. I always worked hard…I didn’t expect something like this would happen at the end of today. I have been revising all this time. My father always told me that I can do it although I was expecting 400 and above” Said an excited Faith.

Faith Mumo says that she was inspired by former Kenyan boxer Conjestina Achieng and she wants to be a neurosurgeon.

“My God is good. I’m very prayerful. I work hard and don’t give up. I want to become a neurosurgeon, to help people with brain damage; for example. It is very hard to see Conjestina Achieng as she is.” She adds.

Here are her KCPE 2020 results: MUMO FAITH KAWEE INDEX: 18348138009 ENG 89A KIS 94A KSL = = MAT 80A SCI 86A SSR 84A TOTAL 433 KNEC HELPLINE 0800724900

“After I go to Kenya High which is my dream school, I want to become a neurosurgeon because a lot of people have head damages and it has been hurtful for me to see Congestina so I decided to become a neurosurgeon,” she says.

Bleak future for BOM, private schools’ teachers

The future is gloom for thousands of teachers working in private schools. This is after most of the private schools moved to terminate payments to these tutors siting challenges caused by the current Corona virus pandemic. With all learning institutions closed, owners of private schools say it has become impossible for them to continue paying the teachers.

Private schools depend on fees paid by parents to run. And since fees can not be collected during the current closure period, most of these schools have opted to send their teachers on unpaid leaves until the current turbulent times are over.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances caused by Covid-19 worldwide, the board of management of Carol Academy has decided to allow you to proceed on unpaid leave effective April 1, 2020 until further notice as directed by the national government,” reads a letter by Carol Academy dated March 31, 2020.

“We regret this action but have no alternative as the school is no longer operational. We pray and hope that the situation will improve in the coming days when we shall inform you to resume work,” the school’s board adds.

Uncertainty for teachers on BOM terms

This group of teachers will find it rough in coming days as family needs stare at them. And with most home owners refusing to offer rent free houses, for the time being, it is going to be very difficult for these crop of teachers.

Elsewhere, teachers employed by Boards of Management (BOMs) will be hoping that the school heads continue releasing their pay. Some school heads have started sending signs of hard times ahead with others advising the BOM teachers to spend whatever little they may be having cautiously. “The future is uncertain. Please spend your March pay prudently as we may face difficulties in months to come if the government does not release more fund,” advised one Principal.

Related News:

BOM teachers receive their pay from monies sent to schools by the Government through the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) programme.

The first Covid19 case was reported in Kenya on March 13. This forced the President to order for closure of all learning institutions to curb further spread of the deadly virus.

The Ministry of Education has indicated that this year’s national examinations (KCSE and KCPE) will no be postponed saying they have back up options. Schools are currently on official holiday.

Latest KNEC circular on handling of KCSE 2020 project based subjects

The Kenya National Examinations Council, knec, has given fresh guidelines on how the 2020 KCSE project based subjects are to be handled. This a follow up to an earlier circular from the council to schools immediately after closure due to the covid 19 outbreak in the country. Via a circular dated March 27, the council had promised to give further guidelines on the handling of Mile stones 1 and 2 for group IV subjects; when schools reopen.

Group IV subjects which have a project component are: Art and Design (442/3), Agriculture (443/3), Wood Work (444/2), Metal Work (445/2), Building Construction (446/2) and Computer Studies (451/3).

But, with schools still closed and some of the projects having reached the final phase (harvesting/ final stage for agriculture projects), the council has now directed schools to capture and upload the data.

“Take photographic evidence of the candidates’ projects (in .gif or .jpeg formats; these two are photograph formats obtained by using a digital Camera) for their (2020 KCSE students taking Agriculture) records and dispose of the project by July 15, 2020.” reads a circular by knec boss Dr Mercy Karogo that is dated June 22, 2020.

“Upload the pictorial evidence together with the scores awarded onto the portal (knec portal) when new guidelines are issued after the schools reopen,” she adds.

The has at the same time promised to issue guidelines for other subjects. Schools are set for reopening in September; with candidate classes expected to be given first priority.
