Dedan Kimathi university has become the fist ever university in Kenya to offer a virtual graduation ceremony to graduands. According to the university, the current shutdown of all learning institutions due to the Covid-19 pandemic has forced them to arrange for this kind of graduation ceremony; since public gatherings have been banned.
“The University will hold the 9th Graduation Ceremony on Friday 8th May 2020. However, due to the challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic and the directives given by the Government of Kenya to help curb its spread, the Graduation ceremony will be conducted virtually,” reads a memo from the university to all graduands.
“Graduands who wish to have private ceremonies after COVID 19 pandemic will be allowed to hire a gown from the University at a cost of KES. 500.00,” adds the university’s administration.
This move has though be opposed by a section of the students who see no reason for holding such a ‘futile’ exercise.
“Why are we paying for a virtual graduation. We don’t need that graduation we need the certificates. What is the money for.? What for.? Stop this looting please,” says one Willy Mayoli.
But the university has come out to defend the move saying it will be more beneficial to the students.
“The graduands will be supported by the University to hold a normal Graduation event after the pandemic. With your certificate which will be out in 2 weeks after the virtual graduation, you can take advantage of any opportunities that might arise. We’re doing this for our graduands in keeping our promise of early and timely completion of studies,” explains the university.
The university is at the same time giving students an option to choose their preferred graduation dates.
“All certificates will be out in 2 weeks after the virtual graduation. Keep in mind though that this will be in line with the season you register to graduate: 8th May 2020, November 2020 or April 2021. Those are the 3 options,” the university further explains.
Those hoping to graduate are expected to pay a mandatory graduation fee of between Sh2,000 ans Sh5,000. Diploma and Certificates courses’ graduands will part with Sh2,000. While, Undergraduate, Post Graduate, Masters and PHD graduands will pay 2,850, 4,500, 4,500 and 5,000 shillings respectively.
The university says the Graduation ceremony will be conducted virtually and streamed live via the following official University URLs:
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp5gn-z3t-HjVTr3N6vkp5Q
Facebook;https://mobile.facebook.com/DeKUTKenya/?_rdc=1&_rdr
Twitter; https://mobile.twitter.com/dekutkenya
To this effect, the university advises graduands to follow the live event from home and warns them against constituting any form of gathering during the ceremony; as it goes against the government’s directive on public gatherings.
Elsewhere, the university is mulling the introduction of online classes so as to ensure their academic calendar is not disrupted.
“We have been receiving concerns from students regarding the continuation of studies, particularly the May-August Semester. The Vice Chancellor will give an official communication after Senate meets this week to deliberate on the way forward,” the university says.
Kibabii University in Bungoma County has added the School of Nursing to its list of courses being offered.
Speaking during the Launch, the Chief Executive (CEO), Nursing Council of Kenya, Dr Edina Tallam, confirmed that the institution had gotten a nod from the Council after putting in place the required equipment that will aid in impacting students with the requisite knowledge.
“Before the Council gives a go ahead for a University to offer nursing, it normally undertakes prior assessment that ensures the required equipment is in place,” she said.

She said that the Covid-19 pandemic has put healthcare providers under immense stress hence the need for more capacity building in the School of Nursing.
Tallam said nurses and midwives have a big role to play in the area of research, clinical care and vaccine administration. “Nursing is more of a calling that requires that all guidelines are fully followed,” Tallam said.
Kibabii University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ipara Odeo, said the University has already admitted the first batch of 60 pioneer students. “I appeal to the Nursing Council of Kenya, to allow us admit up to 100 students,” he said.
Odeo said that Kibabii University has enough facilities and lecturers who will handle the nursing courses effectively.
Bungoma County Chief Executive (CECM) for Health, Anthony Walela, lauded the University for the bold step and urged students to be focused in their studies.
He said the County Government has identified “Nalondo, Mechimeru and Malakisi health facilities that will be used as attachment centres for students.

The International Commission of Jurists, ICJ, has come out to strongly criticize the excessive use of force against striking Maseno University Students. “(we) condemn in the strongest terms possible the police brutality on Students of Maseno University. This excessive use of force was uncalled for and does not only violate (the) Kenyan law but also international guidelines on use of force by law enforcement,” read a presser by ICJ, today.
The agitated students, on Sunday 4th November 2018, staged demonstrations against alleged police harassment. The students blocked the busy Kisumu – Busia road; and lit fierce bonfires. The students staged the demos after their colleagues, who had visited the Maseno Police Station to report on an attack on four of their other comrades, were locked up by the police.
The police were seen being brutalized by the police even after surrendering. See images and video below (Disclaimer! some content may be graphic).

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked universities to invest in research and training that support Kenya’s new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“The Competence-Based Curriculum is a revolutionary step we took as a country to provide our learners with twenty-first-century practical skills relevant to the needs of the present world,” the President said.
President Kenyatta, who spoke on Friday in Nairobi when he awarded a charter to the Aga Khan University-Kenya (AKU), also urged universities to concentrate on producing graduates who can tackle global challenges and make the world a better place.
The Head of State reminded Kenyan universities to ensure that they offer quality education.
“You must strive to remain compliant to both the programmatic and institutional standards set by our professional regulatory bodies such as the Commission for University Education,” President Kenyatta said.
At the same time, the President directed regulatory institutions in the education sector to execute their mandate fully in order to ensure the quality of university education is not compromised.
“Regulatory standards are not mere exercises in box-ticking. They are the lifeblood of a vital process that ensures that learning delivers tangible results for both the learner as well as the nation,” the President emphasized.
On research, the President challenged universities to be at the forefront in providing solutions to emerging challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the event, President Kenyatta also inaugurated the Aga Khan University’s new Kshs 5 billion ultra-modern building. The building will be the university’s main campus in Kenya, housing its graduate school of Media and Communications, Medical College, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Institute for Human Development as well as the Brain and Mind Institute among other programmes.
His Highness the Aga Khan, who is the Chancellor of the Aga Khan University, addressed the occasion via video link, saying the awarding of charter to AKU is a vote of confidence in the university.
He thanked President Kenyatta’s leadership for creating an enabling environment that has allowed private universities in Kenya to flourish.
Education CS Prof George Magoha, Commission for University Education (CUE) Chairman Prof Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha, CUE Secretary Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi as well as the Aga Khan University’s Vice Chancellor Dr Firoz Rasul spoke during the occasion.
With the award of the charter, the Aga Khan University becomes Kenya’s 21st private chartered university.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, MMUST, has announced plans to offers lectures to all students in May, 2020. This is in a bid to ensure that their academic calendar is not affected much by the current Covid-19 pandemic that has seen a total shutdown of all learning institutions. MMUST just like other learning institutions in Kenya was shutdown in March, 2020, following a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The closure was meant to curb further spread of the deadly Corona vijrus.
“Online lectures will resume on 4th May 2020. Students are advised to liaise with their respective schools and and departments for more information concerning online lectures,” says the Acting Academic Affairs Registrar (Prof. Thomas sakwa); In a memo to all students dated April 23, 2020.
According to Prof. Sakwa, the students will then be subjected to examinations once the semester duration is covered. “you are further reminded that only bonafide students shall be admissible for end of semester examination,” he adds.
The university joins others that are offering lectures online.
But, this move has elicited mixed reactions from the students. Whereas some are for this idea others are all arms up against online lectures saying it will disadvantage those from poor backgrounds.
“You have never been serious. How do you expect those students from poor backgrounds who sum up to be more than 50% of the students body to access e-learning yet they can’t even access smartphones,or afford the cost at their cybers not to talk of poor network at their homes,” writes one Dan Miguna; in response to the circular.
It is not only universities that are offering Electronic learning. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum development (KICD) is offering E-learning education services to learners in both primary and secondary schools via various online platforms. To address gaps in access to the electronic gadgets and platforms the ministry is mulling provision of mobile phones to learners in disadvantaged setups.
Elsewhere, the government has reiterated its resolve to ensure this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations will not be affected. The assurance has been given by both president Uhuru Kenyatta and Education CS Prof. George Magoha.
Education CS George Magoha on sunday evening announced the postponement of schools opening by a month, and maintained that no decision has been made yet to reschedule national examinations.
Schools were scheduled to start their second term on May 4th, 2020 but learners will now stay at home for a further four weeks as the Government battles to contain the spread of Covid-19. This means the new opening date would be June 4, 2020; subject to the status of containment of the Corona virus pandemic.
After the extended one month, learners would’ve lost a total of seven weeks of the school calendar. From April 9th, 2020 to May 3rd, 2020, learners were expected to be on their April holidays meaning that the three weeks should not be counted as learning days lost.
