KCSE 2024 results delay- What may have happened

The delay in the release of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results is causing unprecedented tension, fear and anxiety in the Country. Most affected are the candidates, their parents and schools with the Kenya Ntional Examinations Council, Knec, being tight lipped about the delay. But, what may have happened?

The delay has extended long since it has been the tradition for the Ministry of Education to release the results in December.

Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer David Njeng’ere. Changes introduced on the KCSE 2024 exam papers may be the reason as to why release of the results has delayed.

The new system whereby each examination paper was customised for each candidate, with their name, index number and school pre-printed on it has been cited as one of the reasons why the delay has been experienced.

“This is the second year we are releasing results at the beginning of the year because… you know the problem with all of us is that when we release results in December, we are accused of rushing. So, we decided to take time to address all issues and ensure the smooth release of results,” Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said.

Continue reading: KCSE 2024 results: How scammers have swindled Parents & Candidates in a syndicate to upgrade results

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said that the 965,501 2024 KCSE candidates could know their results by Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

“Traditionally, the KCSE exams were released in January and we are keeping to that tradition and we will be releasing them within the next two weeks,” Ogamba had said in Kisii.

The delay to release the results come at a time the nation is facing challenges for smooth implementation of CBC.

What may have caused the delay.

A possible mix-up in the candidates’ score may be one of the reasons as to why announcement of the KCSE 2024 has delayed. Sources privy to the marking of the scripts indicate that sharing of the random numbers between many candidates in several examination centres may have posed a great challenge in making entries of the scores.

But, KNEC is downplauing the delay saying all is well and they are working to have the results released within the next seven days.

“We are working within the timeframe publicly stated by PS Belio Kipsang. The PS said the results will be out within ten days, as the council is working hard to ensure we meet the deadline. But also going by the tradition, there is no point for Kenyans to worry as the second week of January has not lapsed,” the KNEC official, who sought anonymity, said.

One of the key innovations that the Council introduced in the candidates’ scripts was the personalisation of KCSE question papers for each candidate.

According to Knec, this move was designed to prevent cheating by ensuring that each candidate’s exam paper is unique.

Knec CEO David Njengere emphasized that this measure was meant to enhance the security of the exams by anonymising the answer scripts during marking, thereby reducing the chances of malpractice and ensuring fairness in the grading process.

Consequently, examiners were not able to identify the owner of the script, as it  only contained a signature.

“This measure is expected to boost exam security by anonymizing answer scripts during the marking process. The KCSE question papers will be personalized for every candidate. This will help anonymise the answer scripts during marking.” Dr Njengere had said on the run-up to the exams last year.

Teremi School Alumni Want Students’ Welfare Improved

Friends School, Teremi Boy’s High School in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County old boys have expressed concern at the dilapidated infrastructure in the school.

Led by Eng. Boniface Munyole, the alumni are demanding that students’ welfare in their once prestigious school be improved to boost morale and enhance the school’s performance in national examinations.

According to them, the Friends Church sponsored learning institution’s image is shameful, considering that the school is ranked as an Extra-County School.

Speaking to the press, Eng. Munyole who sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 1989, said the school needs urgent improvement of existing infrastructure to offer a conducive environment for learners.

He asked the School Management to involve old boys directly in efforts to develop the school infrastructure.

Manyole said despite the fact that Teremi Boys is an academic giant in Western Kenya, the gate alone which should act as a mirror gives the school a bad image.

The School has a population of over 2,000 boys, sharing very old and limited facilities. He called on all old boys to join the Old Boys Association and support the school.

“If we can come together as a team to support our old school, the school will automatically post better results in subsequent exams,” he said.

He said Bungoma Senator, Moses Wetang’ula, who is an old boy at the school has registered as a member.

Manyole said the other objective of the Association is to network and find placement for students after school.

“We help students get good colleges, universities and TVET institutions,” he said. In the 2020 KCSE exam, 527 students who registered and sat the exam and obtained a mean score of 7.08.

He appealed to the community around the school, Board of Management (BOM), teachers, non-teaching staff and education stakeholders to continue supporting the school.

He thanked the Friends Church ‘Quakers’ for laying a good Christian foundation in the school which has greatly motivated the boys. Munyole said that this year’s mean target is 9.0.

He said that the old boy’s Association is already planning for a funds drive that will involve all Alumni to raise funds to facilitate the construction of a modern school gate.

He said a recent audit done by the Ministry of Education ranked Teremi Boys High School as having poor infrastructure compared to other schools.

He said the playing grounds in the school are poorly drained, asking for the government’s intervention.

KNEC withholds St Peter’s Abwao Secondary School in Migori KCSE 2024-2025 Results

KNEC withholds St Peter’s Abwao Secondary School in Migori KCSE 2024-2025 Results

The 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, results of St Peter’s Abwao Secondary School in Migori have been withheld over suspected examination irregularity.

The extra-county school failed to receive its results Thursday even as other schools were in celebratory mode after posting impressive results.

Education Director for Migori County Jacob Onyiego confirmed that the results of the school had been withheld by the Kenya National Examination Council as investigations continue.

“Investigations are ongoing to confirm that there was no cheating,” Mr Onyiego said.

He assured that once it is confirmed that there was no examination irregularity at the school, the results will be released.

The school’s new Principal Magawe Peter said they were yet to receive their results.

St Peter’s Abwao used to be among the top schools in the county in national examinations.

Last year, it emerged as the best school in Migori county, flooring academic giants in the county and Nyanza region.

The school scored a mean of 9.7 in their 2023 KCSE examinations.

CS Magoha warns over fake exam papers, ‘leakages’

Education officials have discovered that fake examination papers were still circulating in some parts of the country.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said that some centre managers were confusing students by waking them up at night to do fake examinations only to find out that the real papers were different from the circulated fake papers.

Magoha made the remarks today when he officiated the opening of examination papers in Homa Bay County Headquarters.

Magoha said that despite several attempts by some candidates to cheat in the examinations, the integrity of the examinations was still intact. “We are not going to allow anything to jeopardize the integrity of our examinations,’ he said.

The CS who was accompanied by Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan said that despite several attempts by candidates to cheat during examinations, the security agents are quite on top of the process and so far no candidate has had undue advantage.

He further disclosed that due to laxity of some examination staff, students have smuggled phones into examination rooms with the help of some officials but the security agents have been able to track down and retrieve the phones.

He revealed that yesterday in one of the schools, a candidate was assisted by an examination official to smuggle a phone in the exam room and was able to take photographs and send to someone outside who did the exam and sent the answers back through the phone.

The candidate was found and arrested but was allowed back to sit for the exam in the morning and will be taken to court in the afternoon and thereafter be allowed to continue with the examination.

“The integrity of the examination is totally unquestionable and our security agents are quite on top of this process,” Magoha said.

He further blamed some university students and teachers outside who are paid to do the exams and send them to candidates.

The cabinet secretary added that if a candidate has cheated in one or two areas, he will eventually be caught during the marking of the papers.

“From this moment please do the exams the way they are supposed to be done and if you are bold enough to cheat, then the choice is yours and you will face the consequences,” he Warned.

The County Commissioner Moses Lilan also advised security agents to be vigilant at all times during the examination period.

He cautioned them that they would be disciplined if at all examination irregularities are discovered.
