The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to abolish a rule that prevents teachers who have been interdicted or fired from getting their entitlements.

To ensure that discharged teachers are paid their dues, the union will urge TSC to repeal the law, according to Knut Secretary-General Collins Oyuu.

Additionally, the union seeks additional rewards for teachers’ labor.
Workers’ retirement benefits should not be based on their conduct, according to Mr. Oyuu.

He stated during a meeting with Knut members at Kibaoni Primary School that an employee’s conduct has no bearing on their benefits upon leaving employment.

“The TSC Act and the Code of Regulations for Teachers do not allow you to be paid anything if you make a mistake, have been interdicted, and have been dismissed.” As Mr. Oyuu put it, “You will just go home.”

“When you are fired for any reason, your conduct has nothing to to do with your benefits in our union’s proposal. Regardless of whether you committed murder or whatever, you still worked for TSC for a few years, the secretary-general stated.

He stated that TSC should compensate fired teachers for their years of service.

In addition, he urged the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee to give TSC more resources so that it may hire and train more teachers and promote its services.
Teachers in grades C2 and C3, as well as those serving as acting head teachers or deputies, were informed by Mr. Oyuu not to anticipate a promotion under the existing system.TSC did not interview all of our head teachers who have been acting. When a teacher lacks the necessary qualifications to teach or be considered for an interview for administrative advancements, you are wasting your time because those with C2 and C3 grades are not considered for promotions. At a meeting with union leaders in Kilifi, he declared, “Just teach, stop acting.”

According to the union leader, the TSC has sent letters to some teachers asking them to serve as head teachers or their deputies, but these teachers are not eligible for promotions whenever interviews are advertised.
“They’ll say no because your grade isn’t there yet. Dare to be brave. Return those letters and carry on teaching if your grade does not qualify you for an interview to assume the position you are acting on. Don’t be duped,” he advised.

“You will still be annoyed if you are acting and you don’t meet the criteria for an interview. There are a lot of instructors who can act, but they aren’t in those roles. Permit TSC to single out instructors who meet the requirements to participate in those interviews for advancement to administrative jobs. Don’t establish yourself there for the sake of the name; you’ll be disappointed when the moment comes,” Mr. Oyuu advised.
