FORM ONE AGRICULTURE NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n T<\/strong>he word Agriculture is derived from two Latin words Ager<\/strong>which means field and cultura<\/strong> that means cultivation. Therefore agriculture can be defined as field cultivation.<\/strong><\/p>\n Livestock are all the domesticated animals.<\/strong><\/p>\n Definition of agriculture:<\/strong><\/p>\n A<\/strong>griculture is defined as the art and science of crop and livestock production.<\/p>\n As an art<\/strong><\/p>\n Involves use of learned skills and performing them manually (by hand). E.g.<\/p>\n As a science<\/strong><\/p>\n It involves experimentation and application of scientific knowledge e.g. in areas such as:<\/p>\n Production<\/strong>\u00a0 — Are activities that increase the quality and quantity of something.<\/p>\n Crop production activities include: land preparation, planting, fertilizer and manure application, weeding, pest control, disease control and harvesting.<\/p>\n Livestock production activities include:<\/p>\n Branches of agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n Crop farming or Arable farming: <\/strong>\u00a0Is the cultivation of crops on cultivated land. E.g. In pure stands (monocropping) or mixed stands (intercropping).<\/p>\n Include:<\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Livestock farming:\u00a0 Include:<\/strong><\/p>\n Agricultural Economics:<\/strong> Deals with utilization of scarce resources i.e. of land, labour, capital and management. It aims at maximizing output while minimizing costs.<\/p>\n Agricultural Engineering;<\/strong> Deals with use and maintenance of farm tools and equipment, farm machinery and farm structures.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n FARMING SYSTEMS<\/strong><\/p>\n A farming system is an organization of the farm and all the enterprises in relation to each other.<\/p>\n It can be extensive or intensive.<\/p>\n Extensive system<\/strong><\/p>\n Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n Intensive system<\/strong><\/p>\n Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n Extensive or intensive farming can be carried out on small or large scale of land.<\/p>\n The scale of production depends on:<\/p>\n Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n It includes plantation farming and Ranching.<\/strong><\/p>\n Characteristics<\/strong><\/p>\n It<\/strong> is an improved pastoral-nomadism because:<\/p>\n N.B The livestock carrying capacity is low because of limited pasture.<\/p>\n Ranching is becoming more and more common in Kenya because of:<\/p>\n Characteristics<\/p>\n Advantages<\/p>\n Methods of Farming<\/strong><\/p>\n Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n Pastoralism: <\/strong>This is the practice of rearing livestock on natural pastures.<\/p>\n Nomadism:\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>This is the practice of moving from one place to another.<\/p>\n Advantages of shifting cultivation<\/strong><\/p>\n Disadvantages of shifting cultivation<\/strong><\/p>\n Agroforestry\u00a0–\u00a0Involves growing of trees and crops and keeping of animals on the same piece of land at the same time. <\/em><\/p>\n Suitable tree species for agroforestry <\/strong><\/p>\n Advantages\u00a0of Agroforestry\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Disadvantages of Agroforestry<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n FACTORS INFLUENCING AGRICULTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n They are factors in human beings or the way human beings do things. <\/strong><\/p>\n The following is a list of human factors that influence agricultural production.<\/p>\n Effects of HIV\/AIDS on farming<\/strong><\/p>\n Human Factors which improve production<\/strong><\/p>\n Human Factors which lower production<\/strong><\/p>\n They help in improving soil structure through incorporating organic matter into the soil.<\/p>\n\n
