Kenya’s Harambee Stars in sweet victory, but the politicians weren’t left behind. Was their support genuine!

Kenya’s Soccer team, Harambee Stars, lived up to the expectations of thousands of fans who thronged into the Moi Sports Centre, Kasarani, from as early as 8.am, today.

The Stars were in superb form and got their opener via Michael Olunga in the 23rd minute.
Eric Omondi made it 2-0 in the 27th minute and skipper
Victor Wanyama sealed off victory with a fine penalty in the 67th minute; to complete a magnificent rout against the Ethiopians.

Many fans showed love for the local boys and the politicians weren’t left behind, either; from philanthropic donations, to physically making it to Kasarani to witness the epic clash. Was it a case of genuine support and love for sports or just a case of political opportunism, to gain political mileage! Recently, Kenya pulled out of the hosting of 2 soccer competitions citing lack of facilities. Last week, the team was literally broke, as the Federation of Kenya Football, FKF, was unable to meet the team members’ allowances. It took the intervention of the government, via the Deputy president, to bail out the team after coach Migne had given FKF a notice to clear him of outstanding salary (arrears) and allowances.
