Nigeria’s under 16 team overpowered a hapless Botswana team, 5-0, in a pulsating semi final played earlier today at the ongoing Africa Copa Coca Cola Soccer Championship.  Nigeria who lead 1-0 at the break, hit 4 more goals past the Botswana custodian to storm into the finals of the inaugural Coca Cola sponsored championship. Nigeria’s goals were scored by: Williams Gift, James Oghenetega, Hussain Mohammed (who scored one goal each) and Henry Williams who grabbed a brace. At the quarter finals, played yesterday in Nakuru- Kenya, Botswana defeated Mozambique 4-3 via spot kicks to book the semis slot. Nigeria on the other hand overpowered South Africa 2-1, in the other quarter final match. Nigeria will now face off with their hosts, Kenya, in a tough final slated for tomorrow (Saturday 14th December 2018) at 12.00pm.

Kenya, on their part, over powered Zambia by a solitary goal scored in the second half of their semi-final match played today  via a spot kick that was converted by David Leon in the 49th minute. Both Kenya and Nigeria will be striving to claim the maiden Africa Copa Coca Cola under 16 trophy when they meet at Afraha Stadium in the finals, tomorrow. Zambia and Botswana will face off at the playoffs, tomorrow, to determine the who finishes third.

PREVIEW OF TOMORROW’S FINAL

The Kenyans, who are yet to lose any match at the championship, have scored 16 goals in all their matches so far, while conceding one. The highest goals garnered by Kenya in one game is when they put 11 past Ethiopia in their opening group A match, on Monday. Nigeria on the other hand have netted 11 and soaked 3 goals. Nigeria have managed a high of 5 goals in one match; scored during their semi final match against Botswana, today.  Kenya will be going into tomorrow’s final heads high; buoyed by their stronger goal difference (of +15 against that of Nigeria which is +8) and home advantage. The 6 day tournament that kicked off on Monday, this week, comes to a close tomorrow. Twelve countries graced this year’s edition of the championship. Each country presented one girls’ and boys’ team.

DAY 6; SATURDAY 15/12/2018 FIXTURES- BOYS:

  • Playoff: Zambia vs Botswana at 9.00am
  • Final: Kenya vs Nigeria at 12.00pm
