Harambee Stars Move to Second in Group F of CAF 2019 Qualifiers

Ethiopia collected their first Group F win in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after beating Sierra Leone by a slender 1-0 margin at the Hawassa International Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Playing in front of their home crowd, Ethiopia certainly controlled the flow of play and dictated terms but their decision making in the final third was poor.

Consequently, despite having the lion’s share of possession, Ethiopia had very few decent scoring chances.

Nonetheless, the home side continued to push forward and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty-kick in the 35th minute which Getaneh Kebede converted with confidence, 1-0.

Sierra Leone tried to fight back before the break, but entered the half time tunnel trailing by a goal.

Ethiopia came out to firing in the second half, but their shooting in front of goal was poor and they failed to add to their goal tally.

Luckily, for the home side Sierra Leone offered very little in terms of attack and suffered their first loss of the 2019 Afcon qualifying campaign.

The result is good news to Kenya’s Harambee stars who beat Ghana 1-0, yesterday, and now move to second spot. All the 4 teams are now tied at 3 points and are separated by goal difference.  Ghana leads having a goal difference of +4, Kenya lies second with a difference of 0 same as Sierra Leone. Ethiopia are last with -4. Kenya plays Ethiopia in the third round, away, on October 10, 2018

Harambee stars in lucky win over Ghana at Kasarani

Kenya’s National soccer team, the Harambee Stars, defeated the black stars of Ghana, 1-0, to retain position three in group F. The Harambee Stars earned their first win in Group F thanks to a 40th minute own goal by defender Nicholas Opoku. Both sides came close to scoring before the half hour mark.

And it was the hosts who first tested Richard Ofori but, the Maritzburg United Number one pulled a stop to Ochieng Ovella’s powerful strike from the right side.

The Black Stars managed to unlock the Kenya defence with a laser pass, which found Waris at the edge of the box; but he was too careless with his strike.

After 36 minutes, Afriyie Acquah wriggled past his marker in the middle and released Atsu on the left, the Newcastle man picked out Partey inside the box but his final pass to Waris was blocked.

In the 40th minute, the Harambee Stars jumped into the lead courtesy of an own goal, by the Ghanian defender. Eric Omondi whipped in cross from the right into the box and Black Stars centre back Nicholas Opoku went into with a sliding clearance but that directed the ball into his own net.

Three minutes later, Ghana were awarded a free kick; close to the Kenya box, but Atsu’s kick was cleared out. After the interval, Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah introduced striker Raphael Dwamena to replace winger Edwin Gyasi and they kept pressing for an elusive equalizer.

Kenya were reduced to ten men after Joash Onyango was shown a straight red for a deliberate foul on Waris who was clear on goal to  at the edge of the box. The resultant free-kick was wasted by Partey.

On the 73rd minute, Dwamena blasted the clearest opportunity of the match when he chipped the ball over goalkeeper Matasi and above the post. The Levante man, who was inside the box, had collected a perfect pass from Partey.

Ghana kept on knocking at the door and with ten minutes to go, Partey shot at goal but he dragged his shot too wide.

Two minutes from time, Acquah smashed in a shot from outside the box but it was feeble and straight forward to beat goalkeeper Matasi.

Kenya stayed compact and started ballooning the balls to run down the clock as the minutes petered out, for the end of the match.

This results did not change standings in group F, with Ghana still at the summit followed by Sierra Leone; who play Ethiopia tomorrow away at the Hawass International Stadium , hawass(Ethiopia). The Kenyans will be playing for a positive result for Ethiopia to keep the group open. The match between Ethiopia and Sierra Leone kicks off 16..GMT, tomorrow.

Oh My God! Photo of house built beneath KPLC transformer emerges

A photo of a dangerously built house has emerged. In the photo, a smart house has been built with a Kenya Power and Lighting (KPLC) transformer right above its roof. The upright posts supporting the transformer are immersed directly into the house’s roof, a move that compromises the security of the occupants.

The exact location of the house could not be immediately established.

Kenyans, online, castigated the move by the Engineer who sanctioned the construction.

“This is mediocrity of the highest order…”. Said one Kenyan

This is coming after the government launched a series of crack downs on houses built on Riparian land.

The nature of the construction on the photo raises more questions than answers. Did an engineer certify such a construction? Is the KPLC aware of this construction?

The putting up of structures under KPLC line is, however, common practice in most slums in Nairobi.

KUPPET in New Demands for increased Salaries and Allowances for Teachers

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers has come up with a raft of demands to see increased perks for its members. In the proposal, KUPPET wants salaries and allowances for its members be reviewed upwards by the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) to cushion them against the increased Cost of living. “The cost of living has increased rapidly over the last two years affecting the purchasing power of house hold goods and services. The transport cost has increased beyond the commuter allowance negotiated due to increase of fuel and general overall transport cost”, reads the document presented to the TSC by KUPPET.

PROPOSALS OF NEW ALLOWANCES

The union demands that the following issues may be considered for negotiations to cushion teachers in their delivery of services:

1.COMMUTER ALLOWANCE
The Union demands that commuter allowance be increased by 50% of the current rate. Commuter allowance shall be paid as per Appendix. In the proposal, lowest teachers are to get Kshs. 7,500 while those in higher ranks will get Kshs. 24,000 up from the current Kshs. 16,000 if the proposal is adopted by the TSC.

2. LEAVE ALLOWANCE
The Union demands that leave allowance be paid based on one’s basic pay i.e. an equivalent of one month’s basic pay for all cadres. They want an increased leave allowance of of between Kshs. 27,325-Kshs. 43,694 for the lowest paid teachers in job group C2. Those in the highest job group, D5, are to get a leave allowance of Kshs. 152,000. The leave allowance is payable once a year, with the January salaries.

3.HOUSE ALLOWANCE
The Union demands that House allowance be harmonized across all regions.i.e Teachers in Grade C2 should enjoy the same house allowance whether in Nairobi or Marsabit and this should be in all grades.

4. TOWNSHIP HARDSHIP ALLOWANCE
While teachers enjoy equal house allowance across all regions, the Union proposes the introduction of township allowance. Teachers in urban areas experience challenges of high cost of living and expensive urban transport and this makes no difference with a teacher in a hardship area. We propose a town allowance of 30% of basic salary be paid to teachers in major cities or county headquarters.

5. HARDSHIP ALLOWANCE
Hardship allowance shall be payable to teachers assigned duties in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) areas. However, the areas declared as hardship needs to be reviewed because there are other emerging issues like terrorism, cattle rustling etc.

6. RISK ALLOWANCE
Risk allowance shall be payable to all Science teachers due to exposure to chemicals and other substances. The Union demands that Risk allowance be paid at a rate of 20% of the basic salary as per appendix. This is a new allowance proposed by KUPPET for Science tutors. In the proposal, teachers in job group C2 will get a minimum of Kshs. 5,465 while those in D5 will get a high of Kshs. 30,587 per month.

7. ACCOMODATION ALLOWANCE
Teachers are assigned duties outside the work station. In the civil service, there are guidelines stipulating the allowance for every cadre. The Union has proposed development of clear guidelines on the payment of accommodation allowance (per diem) as well as the amount as shown in the appendix. In the appendix,Teachers in grade C2 are to receive between 6,000 and 3,000 in big cities and others areas respectively. While, those in grade D4 will receive between 10,000 and 5,000

Read also: https://newsblaze.co.ke/knut-to-hold-elections-to-fill-vacant-national-posts/

 7. POST GRADUATE SCHEME OF SERVICE
The teaching service has no scheme of service for teachers who have attained a Masters and Doctorate degrees. Instead, the employer awards three increments to the holders of such qualifications. The proposed scheme seeks to allow TSC recruit teachers possessing post-graduate qualifications at entry level. The Union demands that Post graduate scheme of service be developed and be eligible to all teachers holding a Master’s and Doctorate degree. The said teachers shall be paid an allowance equivalent to 40% of the basic salary.

8.CAREER PROGRESSION
Parties agreed that career progression in the teaching service shall be as provided under Part VI of the Code of Regulations for Teachers. However, KUPPET demands that the Commission in performance of its obligation under this agreement ensures that every teacher under its employment is facilitated to undergo professional development.

9.OVERTIME ALLOWANCE
KUPPET demands that working hours for all teachers be 8 hours per day i.e. 8.00 am. to 5.00 p.m. with one hour lunch break for five days i.e. 40 hours per week – Monday to Friday. Further, the Union proposes that any extra hours worked be compensated as an overtime as teachers in boarding sections are overworked and no monetary compensation are done. The overtime allowance schedule is attached as per Appendix.

10. COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL COVER
We propose that medical allowance be increased by 100% to enable the employer improve health benefits with insurance underwriters. This has been a major cry from most teachers who want the TSC to revoke the AON medical scheme that they term as inefficient.

11. TEACHERS’ SALARY INCREMENT
The 2016 basic salary increment be varied to align the increment with challenges of inflation.

OTHER ISSUES

TheUnion also wants these other issues addressed with immediate effect

  • The marking scheme for employment of Diploma teachers is discriminating and unfair to diploma teachers. We propose it be reviewed so that they are given same marks as graduates.
  • Special schools allowance terminated without consultation should be reinstated.
  • Annual increment for teachers seems not clear. Not all teachers have been given the same.
  • There should exist common cadre grades to show job group progression as before the CBA 26th October, 2016.

It remains to be seen what response  the TSC will give to the proposals. the TSC has been adamant on increasing teachers’ perks and promotions saying they are implementing the current CBA that runs to 2021.

Knut to hold elections to fill Vacant National posts

The Kenya National union of Teachers (KNUT) will hold a by-election to fill vacant posts at the lucrative National office, this coming December. The giant teachers’ union will be holding its 61st Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) in December and part of the Agenda shall be to fill the vacant positions at the top brass organ. The candidates vying for these posts shall be voted for by delegates drawn from all the 8 regions, countrywide.

A total of about 1,887 delegates will be in attendance; drawn from the 8 regions. Rift valley shall have the bulk of the delegates at 503, followed by Eastern at 393, Nyanza 330, Western 239, Central 217, Coast 140, Nairobi 44 and North Eastern at 21 delegates.

The seats up for grabs include those of: The National Chairman, First National Chairman, Second National Vice Chairman and Deputy Secretary General.

Western Region’s Wcliff Omucheyi Etole will be hoping to convince the delegates to confirm him as the National Chairman. He is been holding the seat on acting capacity since the retirement of Mr. Mudzo Nzili. He  may have an easy ride as no other candidate has expressed interest for the seat that is reserved for the Western Region.

Nyanza’s Collins Oyuu, the current assistant Secretary General, will be battling it out for the First Vice Chair post against a strong Central region battalion that encompasses: Patrick Karinga (Nyeri Branch Chairman)  and Clement Gicharu (Executive Secretary Kiambu East Branch). The seat was left vacant after the retirement of Mr. Samson Kaguma. The central leaders feel that the seat should be reserved for Central, as it has been the tradition. They accuse Mr. Oyuu who they term an intruder. But the adamant Oyuu has upped his campaigns and led a section of teachers in burning TPAD forms in Eldoret, on Saturday

The second vice Chairman post has attracted the candidature of Kadzo Undo (the Current National trustee) and Rosalie Mkanjala (Executive Secretary Taita-Taveta branch. Both candidates are from the coast region, for which this seat is reserved.

Ugly scenes marred last year’s ADC at Mombasa. The meeting was disrupted following sharp political and leadership differences. Some delegates from central  Kenya shouted down the Secretary General Wilson Sossion insisting he had to quit as the secretary general of the Union and focus on his parliamentary duties. The conference quickly descend into an ugly scene of throwing chairs at each other and police had to be called in to intervene and restore calm. This is after it emerged, Sossion who is a nominated Member of Parliament, had maintained he will not relinquish his position at the giant union even after a gazette notice requiring him to vacate office. In May, the top decision making organs also tried to ouster Sossion.

Kakamega Teachers Defy TSC ‘Threats’, burn TPAD Forms

Teachers attending a KNUT Annual Branch Meeting in Kakamega, today, set TPAD forms on fire, a move seen to be agitated by the TSC’s decision to discipline their colleagues in Nyamira. The physically agitated teachers sporadically carried their forms to the middle of the venue ground and set them ablaze, while chanting Luhya slogans. The meeting held at Malinya stadium in Kakamega was attended by KNUT top brass, including the SG, honourable Sossion, and local top Ministry and TSC officials who watched in disbelief.

Early this week, the TSC summoned teachers who had participated in the burning of the copies of Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) during a KNUT meeting held at Metamaywa market; in Masaba North sub-county on 29th August, 2018.

“At the meeting you participated in the burning of the copies of Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) in the glare view of members of the public” read a show cause letter seen by our reporters.

Pressure is mounting on the TSC to do away with the tiresome TPAD exercise that has reduced teachers to mere secretaries at the expense of teaching. Already, the President has directed the TSC to restructure the teacher evaluation process.
