Fireworks expected at this year’s Nyanza Region term one games as Boys’ Basketball holders, Ambira, is pooled in group of ‘death’

Fireworks are expected at this year’s Nyanza Region term one games that kick off next weekend at Homa Bay School. Boys’ basketball defending champions, Ambira, face an ‘uphill’ task in pool A. Ambira will come up against last year’s Semi finalists, Maseno School, and Kisii’s finest, Nyanchwa boys, in group A that has been christened ‘the group of death’. Also in pool A are the boys from Homa Bay County, Oriwo, who will be buoyed by home advantage. Ambira who won the title last year, at St. Mary’s School Yala, and went on to finish third at the national stage will be hoping that the likes of Olum Vincent and Javan will rise up to the occasion this year. In pool B, last year’s finalists Agoro Sare will be hoping to get it right this year after losing at the past finals; thrice in a row. “We won’t let the trophy slip past our hands again, this year,” said Agoro Sare tactician Benson Ochieng. Together with his compatriot, Paul Odock; the head of the technical bench, the duo say it has ‘been painful playing and losing at three finals’.

Winners and runners ups in each pool will play at the semi finals.

In girls basketball holders Barchando, who narrowly lost to Ng’iya girls 47 to 50 at the Siaya County finals yesterday, have been pooled in group B alongside Nyamira’s Sironga Girls, the newbies from Migori (Tuk Jowi) and the hosts, Asumbi Girls.

Meanwhile, all the 2018 winners have booked tickets to this year’s championship. Apart from Ambira (Boys basketball) and Barchando (Girls Basketball), Sega (Girls Handball), Kanyawanga (Boys Handball), Sinyolo (Girls Hockey), Kisumu Day (Boys Hockey), St. Mary’s School Yala (Rugby 15’s) and Maseno School (Rugby 7’s) have also booked their tickets.

The games kick off on Monday 18th March, 2019, with preliminary matches. Finals are slated for the 20th of March, 2019, with winners proceeding to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, KSSSA, national term one games to be staged in April at Shimo La Tewa High School in Mombasa.

Holders Kanyawanga, Sega, Barchando and Ambira off to a flying start as Nyanza region term one games get underway at Homa Bay.

Nyanza Region Basketball boys’ defending champions, Ambira, kicked off their title defence by recording a 100 percent win in their opening two clashes today. Ambira defeated Kisii’s Nyanchwa 65- 59 in a hotly contested group A clash played at Homa Bay High school. It is Nyanchwa who led in the first quarter 19-12 only for them to fall in the second quarter by a 20-11 margin. Nyanchwa picked up from where they had left in the first quarter by recording a 15-14 lead in the third quarter. But, Ambira had other plans as they picked 19 points against Nyanchwa’s 14 in the fourth quarter to walk away with the bragging rights.

In the day’s other basketball boys’ matches show stoppers, hosts Agoro Sare (last year’s finalists) were on fire humbling Nyamira’s Nyambaria 90-22 before seeing off Maranda 72-42.

In the girls’ category, holders Barchando collected maximum points recording back to back wins against newbies Tuk Jowi and regulars Asumbi.

Other title holders who recorded impressive wins in their opening clashes were: Kanyawanga boys (Hand ball), Sega (Girls’ Handball), Sinyolo (Girls’ hockey) and Kisumu Day (Boys’ Hockey).

The games enter day two tomorrow; Tuesday 18th March, 2019, with the remaining preliminary matches and knock outs. Finals will be played on Wednesday with winners booking tickets to the National games to be staged in Mombasa county from 6th April, 2019.
